In no space does lighting matter more than in an entryway. The first room of the home sets the tone for every first impression, so your chosen statement piece carries a lot of responsibility. Thankfully, however, Goldie Hawn cracked the perfect formula.
Later purchased by Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons, the home exudes an authentic, well-traveled spirit, most notably in its Japanese-style paper lantern. Recently, I've seen the paper light trend taking over the most beautiful of homes (yes, there's much more to these pieces than you might have envisaged after spotting them in dorm rooms over the last decade or so).
Over 70 years after furniture designer Isamu Noguchi first visited Gifu, Japan, where he discovered and drew inspiration from the town’s mulberry bark paper and bamboo lanterns, this entryway lighting idea is back – and Goldie's space (featuring a piece like this one from Amazon) is the ultimate styling blueprint.

An IKEA classic, the Havsdjup is one of the first pieces you'll think of when asked to think of a paper light. At only $16.99, it's one of the most accessible ways to bring Goldie's look into your entryway.
This minimalist Japanese-style pendant light is crafted from carefully selected natural white paper. Its distinctive hemispherical design adds a warm, bohemian touch, creating a serene and stylish ambiance wherever it hangs.
For an oversized spherical paper lightshade like Goldie's, this pick from Amazon is a failsafe starting point. Each one is handcrafted from sturdy paper and wire brackets, rigorously inspected for quality.
A sculptural figurine like this seated Buddha makes a striking statement on a console table. Goldie Hawn’s home showcases a similar piece on the mezzanine, overlooking the entranceway, adding both elegance and a sense of calm to the space.
The mandala-style carved door on this wooden cabinet brings a touch of global flair, perfect for showcasing well-traveled treasures. Highlight its intricate design by placing a sculptural decor piece on top to create a captivating focal point.
Although this is an antique piece, it evokes the look of traditional Balinese torches and closely resembles the sconces flanking Goldie Hawn’s Buddha sculpture on her mezzanine.
The popularity of paper lanterns has ebbed and flowed since it first entered the design scene those years ago. However, a glimpse into Goldie's entryway couldn't have come at a better time. Design experts say such lanterns are topping lighting trends for 2026, led by the desire for more biomorphic pieces.
'Takes cues from the natural world not just in materiality, but in the architecture of elements and organisms themselves. Think pod-like pendants, seed-shaped bulbs, and mushroom-inspired shades that feel as though they've emerged from tide pools or forest floors,' comments Mara Rypacek Miller, the Founder of Industville. With this in mind, Mara suggests investing in lanterns made from other materials, such as linen, that are a delicate twist on Goldie's classic paper alternative.
'Lanterns made from light materials like linen offer a sense of softness that is delicate and cosy while still feeling elegant and elevated. Earthy tones, gentle greens, and natural textures like seagrass and mango wood further strengthen the connection to nature, blurring the line between interior lighting and the organic world outside,' she says.
Whether you choose the iconic paper lantern that Goldie helped popularize or explore softer, nature-inspired variations in linen and organic textures, the message is clear: Entryway lighting is more than functional; it is the first hint of your home’s personality. Thoughtful, tactile, and stylish, these lanterns show that great design not only illuminates a space but also sets the tone for everything that follows.
