Joanna Gaines never fails to surprise us with her clever design tricks, which are always, in essence, the simplest of ideas, just executed with her masterful eye, and this beautiful stone kitchen backsplash is no exception.

Rather than going for a regular kitchen backsplash idea with tiles, or a marble slab, for example, Joanna Gaines has used the existing stone walling and alcove to create a wonderfully rustic vignette behind the sink. With the addition of some traditional artwork, brass hardware, and a vase of leafy sprigs, she's forged a striking design 'moment' that feels unexpected and fresh as well as rooted in tradition.

Farmhouse Kitchen-Style Buys Inspired By Joanna Gaines' Rustic Backsplash

Kitchens Editor, Molly Malsom says: 'We're seeing more people go against the grain when it comes to kitchen backsplash trends for 2026. Instead of the usual slab or tile surface, designers are increasingly ditching the backsplash altogether for a more lived-in look.'

This is the appeal of Joanna Gaines' farmhouse kitchen-style backsplash here – it feels like a natural and intentional use of an existing traditional feature. 'Opting to embrace exposed stone walls as a backsplash is a truly charming way to infuse character,' adds Molly. 'The recessed niche is a lovely detail that you really don't see often, but it creates a perfect space for decor.'

We love the way that Joanna Gaines has styled her backsplash alcove. Rather than filling it with practical items such as dish soap and sponges, she's opted for a far more design-led statement. A simple terracotta vase filled with sculptural stems (West Elm's Corina Vases are an ideal fit), and a perfectly proportioned artwork (like Magnolia's Poires Conferences by Pascal Giroud) are all that's required to create a simple, yet stylish vignette.

And, while you might expect to find a feature like this in a living room or perhaps a bedroom, finding it in a kitchen is an unexpected and intriguing surprise. 'This feature feels right at home in a rustic, farmhouse kitchen,' says Molly. 'It feels authentic to the style and honors the bones of the home.'

However, Molly does warn about the potential for damage. 'You just have to make sure you treat and look after the walls properly so they don't suffer from any water damage.' Naturally, this will depend on the type of stone in your home. However, if you are creating the look from scratch, opt for a stone-effect tile like Home Depot's Caldera Rock Sand Porcelain tile, which is specifically designed for use as a kitchen backsplash or in a bathroom, to ensure it's waterproof.

For another idea that looks elegantly rustic and worthy of a farmhouse kitchen, you could try a panelled kitchen backsplash, and create your own alcove shelf like Joanna Gaines' stone version.
