Kathy Hilton's unique and whimsical 'pinkmas' tree is a personal alternative to classic green – it's the fun twist I never knew I needed

Femininity, joy, and design unite in Kathy Hilton's pink Christmas tree – it's a stunning representation of the cultural zeitgeist that I will be replicating

2023 was widely hailed as the 'Year of the Girl' or the 'Girl-aissance.' Popular culture's embrace of phenomena like Barbie and Taylor Swift's Eras Tour brought the celebration of girls and girlhood to the forefront. The movement was reflected in interior design through the increased popularity of pink and feminine motifs throughout the home. The trend is still going strong. Now, Kathy Hilton is bringing the girlhood movement to Christmas decor.

The iconic Real Housewife of Beverly Hills took to Instagram to share a snap of her faux pink Christmas tree with the caption, 'It’s starting to look a lot like Pinkmas!.' Her pink tree is piled high with pink and silver ornaments and white Christmas lights. It's wrapped with a fuzzy white garland and topped with a pile of pink, silky ribbons. The white faux fur base cover grounds the entire look. Hilton's matching Alice and Olivia outfit is just a bonus.

Looking at the tree, I'm immediately filled with joy. As a lifelong 'girly girl,' it feels exciting to see those tastes being celebrated and uplifted rather than put down as unserious. The way Hilton decorates with pink is proof that interiors can be both fun and design-led and that the categories needn't be mutually exclusive.

Though I've long embraced the hyper-feminine in my wardrobe, seeing the 'girlhood' movement embraced in interiors through pink room ideas feels even more subversive. These are spaces that neutrals, saleability, and practicality have long ruled, thought to be more permanent than the clothes we put on our bodies. It feels especially empowering to see the 'girly' as a Christmas tree theme. The space has historically been so traditional, motivated by impressing guests and full of classic motifs, but this tree completely bucks convention. It loudly declares, 'I am celebrating Christmas in my own way.'

In this respect, Hilton's whimsical Christmas decor reflects a larger trend in the world of holiday decorating. The post-pandemic turn from minimalism has ushered in a new wave of integrating personal style into decor. This year's Christmas trees have been more unique, original, and interesting, designed to reflect the owner's tastes rather than have mass appeal.

There are hundreds of different ways to recreate Hilton's style, but no one right way. For a similar effect, I recommend investing in silver and pink ornaments, and white Christmas lights. Accents of faux fur will take you far. Just don't forget to follow the mark of your personal style.

With Kathy Hilton's permission, this could just be the year to embrace girlhood in your Christmas decor.
