Michelle Pfeiffer's controversial Christmas tree is the fun festive alternative to a traditional one – the grandchildren will love it
Pink for Christmas? Throw the rulebook out of the window with a playfully eccentric Christmas tree

The holiday season is the perfect time to be playfully eccentric with your Christmas decor. Actress Michelle Pfeiffer's fun Christmas tree from two years ago is a wonderful example of this mantra. I also expect to see more modern, playful designs crop up again this year.
While this isn't the usual aesthetic we recommend to our dear readers, if you are ever going to push the boat out with your Christmas tree ideas, now is the perfect time to throw the rulebook out of the window.

Christmas decor seems to get bigger – and undeniably more unique as each year passes. Many of us are embracing more modern festive decorating ideas that reflect our personality and introduce fun and frivolity into our existing interior schemes.
I've noticed that retro, nostalgic decor is making its way back into our homes. The demand for tinsel, taffeta, and angel hair is soaring thanks to our need to remind ourselves of simpler times. Couple this with the latest color trend for decorating with pink, and you are on to a winning combination.
'The success in creating a modern or retro look for Christmas decor is to trespass the traditional with an out-of-the-box twist,' says, designer Margaux St. Ledger. 'A fresh twist, a delightful surprise, even something playful while staying quiet and understated with other elements of the overall look.'
Michelle Pfeiffer's Christmas tree champions this notion to a tee. It is a talking point, it takes the order out of the season and will allow any children or grandchildren to create something entirely unique, characterful, and chaotic, but in a good way.
Don't fancy going for something too out of the ordinary? Modern Christmas decor doesn't necessarily have to mean you swap classic Christmas color scheme for neon brights, or traditional ornaments for novelty designs, it can be as simple as adding a subtle, more personal twist on a much-loved Christmas tradition, making it feel more in-tune with your personality and your home's style.

Shop the look
Shopping for holiday decorations has become one of my favorite pastimes lately. Amazon's Holiday Shop is a good starting point, but I love Walmart's Christmas Shop and Wayfair for fun, kitschy buys.
This miniature 4ft tree is a great way to add a modern touch of playful Christmas magic without going overboard. You can, like I plan to do, restrict it to a 'fun corner' of the house. It is currently on a limited time offer.
Hark back to the past with lashings of gold tinsel. I have found memories of decorating my parents Christmas tree with angel hair, tinsel and all sorts of ribbons and bows. Let's invite that nostalgia back into our homes...
Tinsel, once the must-have decoration of the 1990s, is making a comeback. Thankfully, I still have most of mine from this decade, but if you don't, it isn't too late to shop for one now. It will brighten up any festive scheme.
