Miley Cyrus breaks a cardinal decorating rule with her 'floating table' – her unexpected layout transforms a dead space into a stylish breakfast area
The singer tosses aside the maxim that furniture shouldn't be floating in the middle of the room with an innovative kitchen layout

Miley Cyrus's breakfast nook isn't where you'd expect it to be; instead, it's in the middle of her kitchen. It's a masterclass in clever, unorthodox uses of space.
For years, the rule of thumb has been 'furniture should never float in the middle of a room.' From rugs to sofas to chairs, we've been conditioned to orient our furniture around the edges of a room. Miley's kitchen layout bucks this trend by creating a floating breakfast nook. It signals a new era in how we zone our kitchens and think about dead space.
Though we most often see the practice of 'zoning' in living rooms, this space shows that it's possible to replicate in any room. In photos of Miley's kitchen shared by her mother and designer Tish Cyrus, we see that the rockstar has an open concept kitchen that flows into what is most likely a living room. The circular table to the left of the island defines distinct prepping and eating zones. It's both stylish and functional. With people thinking about how to make their large spaces feel cozier with the shift away from minimalism, this zoning practice is likely to become a kitchen layout trend.

This gray and white striped zebra chair emulates the stunning animal print of Miley Cyrus's in a more subtle huge. These would look beautiful around a white circular table.
Add visual interest to your white countertops with an interestingly shaped fruit bowl. The matte texture looks like the one in Miley's space.
Layering these sculptural black cutting boards against your backsplash instantly makes the space feel textured and cool. They are the perfect contrast to a white kitchen.
Furthermore, the design is a wonderful way to make the most of dead space in a kitchen. In many homes, the area between the kitchen and the living room in the open layout would remain empty. However, by positioning a table in the space, the designer turns it into a functional place to enjoy breakfast or a casual lunch with friends.
Though design rules can be a helpful blueprint for thinking about how to decorate and layout a room, breaking the rules can be just as fruitful. Don't be afraid to try a taboo layout, it just might transform your home.
