Hear me out: Robert Downey Jr.'s blue, red, and stone bathroom color scheme is highly unusual, but it works

The combination of blue, red, and gray is rarely seen, but the shades work together harmoniously in Robert's bathroom – design experts explain why

When you visualize the combination of red, blue, and stone all together in one space, it's hard to imagine that it would be attractive. Robert Downey Jr.'s bathroom, however, turns assumptions completely on their heads. It's completely stunning.

His bathroom idea feels like the inside of a stylish cave. It has brushed tan walls and countertops lined with multicolored stone tiles. The sink is carved from a large rock with the craggy base still present. A red vase and candle, and a blue plate on the wall add a touch of intrigue and offset the earthiness of the space.

Though the bathroom color combination is unusual, it works so well because it combines two foolproof interior design techniques: incorporating natural materials and the unexpected red theory (which works with any primary color, hence the addition of blue).

To explain further, Robert Downey Jr.'s method of bringing the outside in is using stone gratuitously. This technique always looks especially striking when used in a bathroom.

Magdalena Gierasinska, design expert at Barker and Stonehouse, advises: 'Beyond its beauty, statement stone plays a pivotal architectural role. A striking stone surface used across a kitchen island, fireplace surround, or bathroom wall can define the rhythm of a room. The material brings gravitas, grounding the space while offering texture, reflection, and spatial clarity.'

Furthermore, Robert's pairing works because it is a masterclass in decorating with primary colors. This method of incorporating a bold element of color is often referred to as the 'Unexpected Red Theory,' but it works the same with both yellow and blue.

Bathroom design expert, Warren Kinloch, states: 'The Red Theory or Unexpected Red trend introduces a bold and unexpected element into bathroom design, elevating the space with a vibrant pop of the color red. Adding a single red accent piece, such as a statement mirror frame or a bold vanity cabinet, instantly draws the eye and injects energy into the room. In a bathroom, where functionality often takes precedence, this unexpected burst of color serves as a focal point, tying together disparate elements and infusing the space with personality.'

He continues: 'Whether you opt for a deep crimson or a bright cherry red, incorporating this bold hue adds a sense of drama and vitality to your bathroom, creating a space that feels truly dynamic. Expect this to be a feature your guests comment on!'

Though it can be scary to think outside the box with your design, Robert Downey Jr.'s home demonstrates that when it is rooted in well-researched principles, you can't go wrong. Coloring beyond the lines becomes easier when you have a guidebook.
