Robert Downey Jr.'s California home, designed by architect Nicolò Bini, is an aerodynamic, eco-conscious masterpiece, but it's the landscape that truly completes the vision. Created by landscape designer Ana Saavedra, the drought-tolerant backyard feels as sculptural and organic as the architecture itself, proving that great outdoor spaces are every bit as considered as the homes they surround.

At the heart of the garden is a striking freeform swimming pool that appears to emerge naturally from the landscape rather than dominate it. It's a lesson in designing a pool that feels like part of the garden, with soft curves, layered planting, and natural materials combining to blur the boundary between the built environment and nature. The result is a serene retreat that looks perfectly at home in the California landscape.

Large swimming pools can easily overwhelm a backyard, particularly when they're surrounded by expansive hardscaping. Here, however, every element has been carefully considered to soften the pool's impact. The fluid, curving shape echoes the surrounding flower beds, while generous swathes of drought-tolerant planting wrap around the water, creating a seamless transition between the pool and the rest of the garden.

'In an awkwardly shaped garden, a pool with a free-flowing design will make the most of the space,' says Janine Pattison, Garden Designer at JPS Landscape Design. 'It's ideal for larger gardens where you want to create a more naturalistic feel.'

If you prefer a rectangular pool, Janine recommends softening its edges with thoughtful planting. 'Use planting to fill the uneven spaces around the pool so it feels integrated into the landscape rather than sitting in isolation,' she says. 'Do bear in mind that irregular pools are more difficult to cover, so you may need a bespoke cover if heat retention is a priority.'

Robert Downey Jr.'s expansive backyard also demonstrates another smart landscaping principle: giving the pool its own destination within the garden. Rather than positioning it directly outside the house, the pool sits comfortably within a dedicated 'outdoor zone', surrounded by lush planting that creates both garden privacy and a stronger connection to the landscape beyond.

'Plant around one or two edges of the pool to make it a true garden feature and to bring flowers, foliage, or lawn right up to the swimmers,' says award-winning Garden Designer Andy Sturgeon. He also recommends using low walls or hedges to help disguise the pool, allowing it to blend more naturally into the surrounding garden.

Privacy planting is another standout feature of the design. 'When using shrubs and other plants for privacy screening around pools, layering is key,' explains Rafi Friedman, President of Coastal Luxury Outdoors. 'Start with low-growing plants close to the pool, then gradually introduce taller shrubs as you move toward the property boundary. Multiple layers provide a softer, more effective screen than a single row of planting.'

The surrounding timber deck also plays an important role in grounding the design. Unlike large expanses of paving, timber introduces warmth and texture while complementing water, stone, and planting. It's a durable, relatively lightweight material that works across a range of architectural styles and creates a softer, more natural transition between the pool and the wider landscape. Pairing timber with natural stone, as seen here, further enhances the relaxed, Mediterranean-inspired feel.

The overall effect is a backyard that feels calm, cohesive, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Rather than allowing the pool to become the dominant feature, the landscaping ensures it's simply one beautiful element within a thoughtfully designed outdoor sanctuary – a design approach that's as timeless as it is practical.
