I've never been a fan of gray, but Stanley Tucci might just have changed my mind with an Instagram post featuring a gray lounge chair and coordinating footstool.
The piece in question, seen in his living room, is the Womb Chair (available at 1stDibs), an icon of mid-century modernism designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948. Eero created the chair at the request of Florence Knoll, who famously asked for a chair that was 'like a basket full of pillows, something I could really curl up in.' To achieve its organic, enveloping shape, he broke away from traditional 'overstuffed' furniture construction, pioneering the use of a molded fiberglass shell – a technique borrowed from New Jersey shipbuilders – to create a 'womb-like' sense of security.
Designed to support multiple sitting positions, not just upright, the chair has remained a top seller for over 75 years. Stanley's is upholstered in gray, and the color has never looked as chic. I've already started saving for my own. In the meantime, I'm eyeing affordable alternatives, such as this similarly shaped chair on Amazon. I couldn't resist rounding up a few other finds that complement it, too, below.

One of the 20th century’s most iconic chair designs, the Eero Saarinen lounge chair was created over 75 years ago and remains as striking as ever. This original 2010s Womb Chair features a polished chrome steel frame and has been reupholstered in Salt-and-Pepper Boucle.
Chunky, curved, and utterly luxurious, this is the accent chair of dreams (and a copy that has the same cool energy as Stanley's). It would work perfectly as a living room accent piece, too.
This footstool combines style and function with its sleek mid-century modern design and practical features. I'd pair it next to your accent chair to lounge in ultimate style.
This table lamp offers a modern twist on a mid-century design, combining timeless sophistication with contemporary style. A metal dome shade rests on a sleek column base, creating a balanced and elegant composition of classic shapes.
You can achieve a sleek, modern look without the hassle of high-maintenance care. This blue rug lets you have both style and convenience. Its chic, basketweave-inspired pattern is framed by a thin border that defines your space, while the subtly raised design adds a touch of dimension.
According to design experts, gray is one of the most versatile neutrals you can decorate with, fitting into a wide variety of aesthetics, from Scandi minimalist to more traditional styles.
'Gray’s adaptability and understated charm make it an excellent choice for any design scheme,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'Whether you’re aiming for modern minimalism, classic elegance, or cozy comfort, gray paint offers a timeless foundation that allows your personal style to shine through.'
To decorate with gray in a similar way, start with the all-important contemporary chair, then add a knit throw, like this one from Serena and Lily, and a mid-century style footstool, like this one from Amazon. Together, you have a delightful mix of textures and materials that proves decorating with gray is anything but boring.
