Able to transform a space from cold to comforting, the power of living room seating is undeniable. While a sofa is essential to any living room, what makes this space feel truly well-designed (not to mention inviting) are layers of seating types and styles.

While some might believe that sofas are the most powerful vessels in a lounge, accent pieces are just as crucial. Intentionally positioned seating is what brings a scheme together and ensures that (a rather dominant) sofa blends seamlessly into the design.

Victoria's living room seating is effortlessly stylish. From the deep green velvet sofa to the wingback armchair, her space features an array of chic seating styles. At the heart of her scheme is a rather large ottoman that connects the decor and brings that all-important cozy feel.

I'm convinced every living room needs an ottoman after seeing Victoria's luxurious choice.

While an ottoman of this size may feel a little striking, its scale is actually a rather clever move; it gives the space a cozy, comfortable feel and brings cohesion to the scheme. Not only this, it doubles up as a storage vessel, hiding any unsightly trinkets or essentials from view.

Although there are several seating types in the living room (the plush velvet sofa and wingback chair, to name a few), the ottoman blurs the lines between the opposing styles, providing that all-important sense of intention behind the room's design.

Laura Hammett, Creative Director of the eponymous design studio, explains, 'An ottoman is one of the most versatile and essential pieces in a living space, effortlessly blending function with style. It serves as a central anchor, helping to define a seating area while offering a sense of cohesion and balance to the room. Beyond aesthetics, its multifunctionality makes it a valuable addition – whether as a comfortable place to put your feet up, an alternative to a traditional coffee table when styled with trays, or even as discreet additional seating when entertaining.'

Styling around a couch can prove tricky, particularly if your space edges on the smaller side. While varied seating types might not be possible, an ottoman will give your room cohesion and curation, no matter its size. In Victoria's case, the suede green style connects the color palette and is the perfect choice between the dark sofa and the paler armchair.

While Victoria's living room sofa is luxurious, it's her ottoman that gives the space a real sense of accomplishment. It connects the many layers of color and shape and provides that all-important pared-back feel we all strive to create.
