When it comes to antique shopping for the home, many of us stray away from furniture purchases and instead opt for small accessories. However, a vintage furnishing, such as a sofa, can truly elevate a room to the next level.

Look no further than Zooey Deschanel's living room for proof. The actor, who is known for her penchant for vintage decor, recently shared a clip of her in her living space on her Instagram page, and we couldn't help but admire her Victorian-style sofa.

The gorgeous wood frame is intricately carved, showing off a green, floral upholstery that adds color to the white and wood space. Needless to say, it makes the case for decorating with antique furniture.

According to design experts, one of the best ways to incorporate vintage and antique pieces into the home is to match them with what you already have – even, and especially, if your design scheme leans more modern.

'Mixing furniture from a range of periods is a brilliant way to create a layered look, making a home feel like it has organically evolved over time,' explains designer Rebecca Hughes. 'This juxtaposition offers the best of both worlds - the coziness of traditional style and the crispness of contemporary design all in one harmonious space.'

If you're not quite ready to commit to a statement piece, like an antique sofa, Rebecca says that smaller accessories can still have a large impact in the living room and beyond; think Tiffany lamps, bronze frames, or even a vintage side table.

'Antique trinkets bring a wonderfully warm and cozy feel to the space,' she explains. 'We also use antiques to help soften the space and authentically add character.'

As Zooey's space shows, the best interiors happen when our personalities shine. Whether you prefer vintage or contemporary style, a mix of pieces helps to achieve that lived-in authentic look.
