As much as we love our furry friends, all too often, their furnishings are eyesores in the home. To nab a dog bed or cat tower that is as elevated as it is durable is quite the feat, but Zooey Deschanel has managed to meet the (very high) mark.
The actor recently showed off her cats' tree on her Instagram page, and we were instantly drawn to the natural, woven material of the baskets. It would fit right into a neutral or colorful space, making me think that finding chic pet beds is definitely possible.
With materials like rattan and wicker serving as staples in '70s revival aesthetics and longstanding trends like organic modern, we are convinced that pet furniture made with these materials can be visually appealing, too.

This is a new launch from Ruggable in collaboration with Jonathan Adler. When we interviewed him about the collection, he told us: 'I was sick of going to friends’ houses and seeing their ugly pet beds' – having been the friend with an ugly pet bed, I can see his point. There are a few designs in the collection, but this is the most neutral. Like their rugs, this is fully washable, so perfect if you want to use it on a patio.
Designers say that there are key elements to look for when considering a pet bed. First and foremost, volume.
'Instead of the flat pillow-style beds that sit on the floor, I tell clients to look for elevated options because they instantly feel more intentional,' explains San Antonio-based designer, Brittney Luedecke (Wanless) of Styled by Brit. 'They’re making adorable little couches for dogs and cats right now that almost look like accent chairs. The only downside is you can’t just throw them in the wash, so if you can invest in one, get one with removable covers or keep a pretty throw layered on top.'
She also explains that creating a designated area for your pet's furniture helps in keeping a space looking tidy and cohesive.
'I also like to create a “zone” for the pet so the bed isn’t floating in the middle of the room,' she says. 'Even just placing it on a rug or tucking it next to a console makes it look styled.'
Finally, she suggests sticking to neutral hues for a truly timeless look in your living room or entryway.
'Color-wise, I suggest tying it to your palette neutrals,' she tells us. 'Cream, gray, or even muted greens or blues blend seamlessly, and materials like linen blends, boucle, or wood frames feel elevated without screaming “pet furniture."'
