'I was sick of going to friends’ houses and seeing their ugly pet beds' – so designer Jonathan Adler created a collection that made them as chic as our own furniture

Ruggable’s first-ever home accessories line with the maximalist designer lets you – finally – coordinate your space with your pet

These days, I’m convinced that some animals live better than we do. Their lifespans are being extended with supplements. Their food comes refrigerated, plated in TikToks like $46 steak tartare. And now, thanks to Ruggable’s first-ever home accessories drop a debut line of pet beds, rugs, and pillows – they can finally out-style us, too.

It helps that the launch comes courtesy of Jonathan Adler – potter, designer, and longtime Ruggable collaborator. Given his distinctly dynamic design language and expansive archive, they could’ve gone in any direction (bedding, candles, window treatments, and so on). But pet beds? That felt personal.

‘We expanded to pet beds for purely selfish reasons I was sick of going to friends’ houses and seeing their ugly pet beds sitting out,’ Jonathan tells me. ‘If it’s going to be out, it should look as great as the rest of your home does. You – and your pet – deserve it.’

His home decor muse? A rescue pup named FoxyLady. ‘She was my inspiration for the collection, and I’m happy to report, she loves everything we came up with.’

Some FoxyLady-approved designs include Jonathan’s signature bold geometrics, classic monogram motifs (‘F’ for Foxy, of course), and notably: the return of his cult-favorite tiger pattern.

'Nothing’s sadder than taxidermy, and this is a way to get the look without harming any animals,'  says Jonathan of the Tiger Blue Woven Bolster Pet Bed.

A faux taxidermy icon from his earlier Ruggable drops, it’s perfect for a feisty feline – or any four-legged creature with main character energy. ‘Foxy has a ferocious side,’ he says. ‘The tiger motif lets her express it.’

And because this is Ruggable (one of Homes & Gardens' tried and tested best places to buy rugs), form follows function. The beds come in two parts – an outer bolster and an inner memory foam mattress – each wrapped in removable, machine-washable covers. There’s even a water-resistant insert to ward off accidents and inevitable mess (see: how to dog-proof your home).

Go full feline, let the letters speak, or do a little bit of both. There are plenty of matching moments in the lineup, but each piece plays together just as well.

Of course, the question remains: how matchy-matchy should you go when living with pets? Should you coordinate with your pet, or is subtlety the smarter route? Jonathan plays it cool. ‘I can only hope to look as gorgeous as Foxy (though we’re both about the same height),’ he jokes. ‘It doesn’t matter if you match or complement – what matters is that you love the piece. If you love it, it will work.’

In other words, one for you, one for them. A pattern on the floor, and a matching perch for your furry companion. At long last, the whole household gets in on the design moment.
