Antique sale FAQs and tips

November offers so many wonderful vintage and antique markets, but there are a few things you need to consider before you visit, especially when it comes to outdoor events in states with colder weather.

One of the most overlooked but necessary advice is to take cash with you. A lot of events that sell tickets on arrival will only take cash, and some sellers won't have card machines. It's also a great way to budget if you're known to get a bit overexcited!

It's also important to prepare if you are shopping with particular pieces in mind. If you're buying furniture, measure the space in your home where you intend for it to go, and take your tape measure so you can measure the antiques.

If you live in a state that is starting to experience colder, wetter weather, make sure you dress appropriately. If the event is outdoors, take wellies, raincoats, and umbrellas to be on the safe side. Even in warmer climates, wearing comfortable shoes is a must, as you will find yourself doing a lot of walking.

And finally, bring with you a sturdy tote bag or shopping wagon. The former is ideal for one or two smaller decorative items, but anything more, and you might want to consider something larger. This Heavy Duty Folding Fabric Wagon is a great option.

Obviously, if you are buying larger furniture items, consider arriving with a van, or check in advance if the show or vendors can arrange delivery and transportation of larger items. Check with event organizers if you can drive a van up to the stall you've purchased from, or see if the dealer you are buying from is happy to arrange delivery.

Fall is widely considered the best time of the year to shop for antiques by experts, so fitting in a trip to your local sales in November is always a good choice. There's never a better opportunity to find classic furniture and unique decor for your home – and prep for the upcoming season of hosting. It's all about sourcing timeless pieces that create the coziest feel to your home. And if you're planning on travelling, check out the best US cities for antique shopping.
