Antique sale FAQs and tips
Interior designers always recommend decorating your home with a mix of old and new, and antiques are key to this. But whether you're a seasoned shopper or a novice heading to your first market, there are a few things to consider.
Firstly, make sure you check ahead whether the market you are heading to sells tickets at the gate, or if you need to purchase them in advance. You don't want to arrive just to be turned away. If tickets are sold on the day, double-check if you can pay by card or if it's cash only – quite a few events are cash only, so make sure you arrive prepared.
If you're heading to your local fair with a shopping list in mind, make sure you measure the space in your home where you want the item to live, and take your tape measure so you can measure the antiques. There's nothing worse than finding your dream item and it not fitting in your home. It's also worth checking what you can fit through your front door and up your stairs – it's something not many people think about!
As we are now in the fall, you need to be prepared for the changing weather conditions. Especially in states where wind and rain are commonplace, make sure you dress for the weather and take a waterproof coat, layers, an umbrella, and a weather-proof pair of shoes. You don't want to spend the day feeling cold and soggy!
And finally, consider in advance how much you plan to buy and how you will carry your purchases. A tote bag is fine for one or two smaller decorative items, but anything more, and you might want to consider something larger. This Heavy Duty Folding Fabric Wagon is a great option.
If you're buying furniture, though, you'll need to do a bit more planning for the delivery and transportation of larger items. Check with event organizers if you can drive a van up to the stall you've purchased from, or see if the dealer you are buying from is happy to arrange delivery.
October is one of the best times of the year to shop for antiques, especially when it comes to fairs and markets. There's always a subtle nod to the season, and the designs you'll find are perfect for bringing the essence of fall into your home. It's all about timeless pieces that create the coziest feel. I’ve worked in the interiors magazine industry for the past five years and joined Homes & Gardens at the beginning of 2024 as the Kitchens & Bathrooms editor. While I love every part of interior design, kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most exciting to design, conceptualize, and write about. There are so many trends, materials, colors, and playful decor elements to explore and experiment with.
