40 Years Later, IKEA's Most Iconic Shelving Unit Is Back – And It's Undergone a 2026 Refresh That's Just as Chic but So Much Cheaper

If you haven't heard of the iconic Niels Gammelgaard ENTERI shelving unit, you will definitely recognize it. It's an IKEA classic, a retro piece that, even though it is (or was) out of production, appears on second-hand marketplaces for hundreds of dollars.

Since its debut in 1986, the industrial shelving has received nothing but praise for its functional design and slick, industrial look, making it one of the most valuable vintage IKEA pieces to date. While the original shelves reach for 10 times the original price at auction and retailer sites, IKEA's newest PS collection includes (wait for it) an all-pine unit that 'pays tribute to classic IKEA designs from the 1980s.'

Inspired by the original design, the IKEA PS shelves feature the same recognizable tiered shape, but this time made from exposed pine and finished with red accents. Understated and timeless, it's a storage solution that works in every space, from home offices to hallways.

IKEA's original PS collection was filled with innovative designs, including the iconic shelving unit, amongst other quirky pieces. 'In the early 1990s, IKEA began a process to strengthen its identity as a design company,' explains a spokesperson from the IKEA museum. 'IKEA wanted to get back to its roots and manifest the aesthetic of Scandinavian simplicity. The result was IKEA PS, a recurring collection of innovative design at low prices.'

The PS shelving is a statement design, but simple enough that it can be styled to suit any aesthetic, from uber modern to a contrasting piece in a more traditional room.

While the 1980s shelves can prove pricey (like these original ENETRI shelves on 1st Dibs on sale for $1,165.34), the new IKEA PS 2026 Shelf unit feels just as distinctive in both form and function. Its angular slats provide a striking feel that transforms the shelving into more than a storage solution, but a design moment that commands attention. The red accents bring a playful edge to the exposed pine, too.

While pine can feel a little new, the unit has been designed to withstand years of use. It's also a wood that ages well, so stains or signs of wear actually bring a graceful, aged feel that only gets better with time.

Maria O’Brian, Creative Leader of IKEA’s PS 2026 PS collection, says, 'Central to IKEA PS is the idea that simplicity doesn't have to be boring, but that it can reveal design in its purest and most engaging form. My hope is that through interaction and surprise, this simplicity gives way to discovery, with objects that have multiple functions and unexpected details that make people happy.'

For a fraction of the price of the original shelves, it's fair to say the PS shelf is a piece worth investing in. Contemporary yet also iconic, it's a timeless vessel that'll only get better over the years.
