Named after co-founders John and Giles’ shared love of the sea, British kitchen brand Neptune continues to make waves with its steadfast design ethos and effortlessly beautiful spaces. There’s a reason it’s considered one of the country’s most admired kitchen makers.
Originally launched as a hammock company – complete with nautical canvas and woven rope – Neptune’s story has evolved far beyond its coastal roots. Today, the brand’s collection spans over 1,500 pieces, from handcrafted kitchens and furniture to lighting, home accessories, and its own edited palette of paints.
At its core, Neptune has always been about creating homes that feel lived in, not just looked at. Every piece is designed with longevity in mind – functional, beautiful, and made to age gracefully. That philosophy remains at the heart of its kitchen designs, where craftsmanship and character come together in spaces rich with color, texture, and thoughtful detail.
We spoke with Neptune’s design director, Fred Horlock, about the brand’s enduring style, its evolving inspirations, and what’s next in the world of woodwork.
How Would You Describe Neptune’s Style and Look?
‘Neptune’s style is deeply rooted in British heritage,’ says Fred Horlock, design director at Neptune. ‘Our approach to craftsmanship marries traditional elegance with modern engineering, resulting in designs that feel timeless rather than trend-led. Whether it’s a kitchen, a piece of furniture, or a decorative accessory, every item is created with the same intention – to be lived with, loved, and made to last for generations.’
What Are Neptune's Favourite Materials to Work With?
'Wherever possible, we use natural materials and solid hardwood for our furniture, which are assembled using traditional techniques. They’re not only kind to the environment, but they also create products that last much longer than manufactured materials like MDF or chipboard.
When it comes to kitchens, solid oak is the best material for cabinetry and combines form with function. At Neptune, we believe in creating kitchens that are not only visually captivating but also built to stand the test of time – solid oak and tulipwood deliver on this promise. Our Suffolk, Chichester, and Henley kitchens are all crafted with sustainably sourced timber. It's natural warmth and rich grain patterns bring an organic feel to any kitchen, making each piece unique and personal.'

What Trends In Kitchen Design Are You Currently Excited About?
'Freestanding kitchen design is an exciting kitchen trend that is redefining kitchen versatility, and Neptune’s new kitchen furniture range highlights the functionality of this style. Freestanding furniture adds character, softening the uniformity of fitted cabinetry.
It breaks up rigid lines and creates visual interest, resulting in a kitchen that feels inviting and sophisticated. It also contributes to functionality, providing your kitchen with additional storage or workspace, making it a practical and versatile choice. Kitchens are often social spaces, and the introduction of freestanding elements can also help create a softer and more inviting atmosphere.'
Where Do You Draw Your Inspiration From?
'Antique furniture is a natural inspiration for us – we want our furniture to last for 100 years and antiques have already done just that, so they inform both our making and design processes. British heritage plays a key role in shaping our collections, from the refined proportions of Georgian furniture to the understated elegance of English country homes. These influences guide both our craftsmanship and design approach, ensuring each piece feels timeless and still suited to modern living.'
What Would You Call Your Specialisms?
'Neptune’s quality and craftsmanship, rooted in traditional cabinet-making principles, is our core ethos. Our kitchens are made from sustainably sourced timber, combining traditional joinery and modern engineering techniques for the highest quality designs. Uniquely, Neptune only uses natural materials, for example, no MDF or chipboard, and while much of the craftsmanship may be invisible, it gives our designs the strength to last 100 years and more.
Neptune kitchens can even be de-installed and re-fitted from one home to another or reconfigured to suit the evolving needs of the home. We design and make our kitchens to last a lifetime, and they come with a lifetime guarantee so you can have peace of mind.'
What Makes a Beautiful Kitchen?
'A beautiful kitchen balances a functional layout, efficient storage, and personal touches. Placing the kitchen centrally, near the dining or living areas, enhances flow and prioritises entertainment. Focus on the placement of key workspaces like the sink and hob, and consider adding an island for extra prep space and seating.
In small kitchens, implement vertical storage ideas and hidden cupboards to keep surfaces clutter-free, and incorporate layered lighting through task lights and accent lamps to allow for both functionality and ambiance. Include inviting elements like family photographs or decorative accessories to create a warm, welcoming space.'
What’s Next for Neptune?
'Neptune has created three new garden furniture designs: the Longmeadow Two-seater Sofa and the Stanway Carver Chair, both handwoven from our durable all-weather wicker, with a warm honey-colour lattice design that lets sunlight shine through.
The Cheltenham Green Stripe Collection, which has a beautifully scrolled frame and is complemented by showerproof cushions, is now available in a new green-striped option.'
With over 30 Neptune stores across the UK and Europe, visiting a showroom is the best way to appreciate the brand’s meticulous attention to detail – from the precision of the hinges to the craftsmanship of every joint. Made from the finest quality timber, Neptune kitchens are not just beautiful; they are luxurious, functional, and built to be a lasting centerpiece in any home.
