According to Nate Berkus, maximalism and metallics beat traditional colors every time

I'll always be won over by traditional aesthetics during the holiday season, but Nate Berkus is convincing me to think a little differently this year. He recently took to Instagram to share some unconventional – but, frankly, brilliant – views on the biggest holiday decor themes for Christmas 2025, and, it seems, his expert eye is drawn to maximalism and metallics over classic colors.

Perhaps it stems from my unwavering loyalty to festive nostalgia, but I admire any designer who can put their own spin on Christmas decor ideas – and Nate Berkus' style is undeniably unique. In his latest Instagram video, he revealed that while he likes a 'polished and matching' look, he prefers organic textures, slick metallics, and earthy hues to a time-honored Christmas palette. And while I might be unfamiliar with this particular look, I'm suddenly desperate to try it out.

'I like polished and matching, but I don't love traditional colors,' reveals Nate in the video. 'I'm sorry,' he jokes, 'I know everyone is going to hate me for saying that.'

Forgoing conventional styles, Nate leans towards a Scandi-inspired look. 'I like metallics, natural materials and browns,' he explains. 'Shocker!'

It's true that his choices often favor neutrals and organic textures; just take a look at Nate's eclectic tablescape formula, which centers on mismatched and rustic pieces like natural woven napkin rings and vintage flatware.

With this in mind, it's no surprise that he prefers earthy elements to the plaid prints and jewel tones that define classic aesthetics. Although Nate is, apparently, 'one hundred percent' into the Ralph Lauren Christmas decor trend, according to the video.

While Nate might not choose bold shades and busy patterns, his design schemes prove that a pared-back look is anything but boring. In fact, organic textures and sleek metallics (like Pottery Barn's burlap star ornaments or Crate & Barrel's gold glitter snowflakes) can provide just as much visual interest as vibrant colors, often producing a quietly sophisticated look.

Plus, as Nate adds in the video, he's still a huge fan of decorating with maximalism – particularly when it comes to tableware.

'A maximalist tablescape is your spot to go crazy,' he reflects. 'I gather stuff from around the house to use on the table. When it comes to decoration, the busier the table is sometimes, the more lively and energetic the evening can be.'

So, if you've ever wondered what Nate Berkus' home looks like during the holidays, you can expect Christmas tree ideas showcasing natural materials and a hint of glamor – and a festive tablescape that really is a masterclass in eclectic design. I might be devoted to Hallmark-style Christmas decorations, but I can definitely see the appeal of Nate's distinctive look, too.

Nate Berkus isn't the only famous figure choosing an unconventional route this year: Martha Stewart has chosen festive ornament planters over traditional wreaths, and I can't get enough of her outdoor Christmas decorating ideas.
