Helen Mirren’s Hollywood Hills Estate Is a Study in Old Hollywood Elegance Inside the Gates of a 1911 Silent Film Compound
Listed for $12 million, the legacy estate has been meticulously preserved by the actress and director Taylor Hackford since the 1980s
There is a fine line between a historic home and a museum piece, but Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford’s longtime Hollywood Hills estate beautifully bypasses the latter.
Appearing on the market for $12 million, the 1911 compound pairs its preserved architectural bones with a newly styled interior that somehow feels perfectly placed in this historic home.
Set across an extraordinary 6.5 private acres, the estate feels remarkably secluded for a property in the hills. Rather than centering everything around a single residence, the compound unfolds as a series of thoughtfully arranged buildings – all of which perfectly blend modern Hollywood luxury with a traditonal Art Deco style.
Inside, Vesta Home embraced the property's Old Hollywood heritage – decorating with antiques and vintage furnishings that sit alongside oversized black-and-white Hollywood photography.
A palette of rich greens, browns, and black accents adds depth without overpowering the home's original character. Deep silk rugs soften the large-scale rooms, creating interiors that feel elegant but entirely liveable.
'Every house tells you what it wants to be, and this one didn't need a lot of noise. It already had incredible character, so our job was really to layer in the right pieces and let the house speak for itself,' comments Brett Baer, the co-founder of Vesta Home.
'We wanted people to walk in and feel like it had always looked this way. Nothing feels forced, and every antique, old Hollywood reference, and furnishing was chosen to support the home instead of competing with it.'

Despite its grand scale, the rooms don't feel overly formal. The natural daylight (for which there is plenty) pours through windows, softening the brown and green color palette and drawing attention to the home's original architectural details, which are allowed to speak for themselves.
Meanwhile, the white kitchen cabinet color (seen above) ensures the cooking space never feels dated. This paint hue is classic for a reason.
Outside, the grounds are just as impressive. Mature trees serve as a blueprint for organic garden privacy ideas, keeping her swimming pool and terraces secluded and beautiful.
New iron outdoor furniture creates relaxed spaces for entertaining, while sweeping views across the Hollywood Hills reinforce the glamor of the home's ZIP code.

Originally built in 1911 for silent film star Dustin Farnum, the estate has had only a handful of owners over the past century, including film producer and journalist Mark Hellinger and actress-producer Gail Patrick.
Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford purchased the property in the 1980s and spent decades carefully restoring it, preserving its architectural integrity while ensuring it remained a home rather than simply a piece of Hollywood history.
