When it comes to garden design, landscaping is essential, but hardscaping is just as important. In Anna Wintour's backyard, a pergola bridges this gap between structural elements and planting.

We spotted the fashion icon's pergola idea in an Instagram post on her dogs' accounts. It rests against her traditional gray home, over her wooden patio. The pergola is sprouting with pretty green vines. Underneath it, Anna has styled a collection of textured planters.

According to experts, Anna's design is primed as one of the biggest looks of 2025. 'Pergolas are emerging as a standout garden furniture trend for 2025,' explains design expert Shelley Cochrane.

'As more people invest in turning their gardens, balconies, and patios into year-round living spaces, pergolas offer the perfect blend of function and form. They create a defined zone which can be used for dining or relaxing.'

Shop the look

Part of what makes a trellis idea like this so wonderful is that it is as functionally beneficial as it is beautiful. Shelley states: 'Additionally, they are practical and versatile – they provide shade for sunny days or shelter for rainy spells – given the unpredictable nature of the weather, it’s no surprise that they’re popular.'

If you want your pergola to look vibrant like Anna's, growing wisteria on it is a great way to make it feel romantic and alive. Master Gardener Luke Newnes advises: 'Wisteria thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, and it needs a strong support structure like a sturdy trellis or wires fixed to a wall. For the best blooms, plant it in a sunny, sheltered spot – ideally south or west-facing – and water regularly, especially during dry spells.'

He continues, 'If your wisteria isn’t flowering, it could be due to too much shade, incorrect pruning, or the type of plant – seed-grown wisteria can take up to 20 years to bloom, while grafted varieties usually flower within 3–5 years. Prune twice a year: cut back long shoots in late summer and tidy up in late winter.'

A pergola is the perfect patio accent, and it's easy to see why more homeowners are incorporating them as part of their outdoor spaces.
