Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis' kitchen feels utterly modern while looking 'decades old' – you can get the look by following this rustic trend
The Hollywood couple mixes natural materials like wood with brass, glass, and black paint for a kitchen that is elevated and chic

The farmhouse kitchen is a timeless style that endures due to its warmth, textures, and natural feel. The modern farmhouse, however, gives this tried and true look a more contemporary feel, and it's easier to achieve than you might think.
Take Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis' kitchen: the couple's space is undeniably rustic, with wood ceiling beams and natural finishes shining through the restored property. However, it's the accessories, color palette, and furnishings that make it a true modern farmhouse.
With a glass pendant, a black-painted fridge with brass handles, and black countertops, the space is balanced beautifully between its contemporary sensibilities and rustic ambiance.

According to experts, the modern farmhouse kitchen is a fantastic style to adapt if you're looking to make your space feel trendy and timeless all at once.
'The classic farmhouse kitchen is beloved for its warmth, inviting feel, and timeless style, but in today’s modern homes, this look can be elevated with a contemporary or industrial twist—most notably through the use of mixed metal materials,' designer Nina Lichtenstein explains.
Hardware, such as brass handles on a fridge (like in Ashton and Mila's kitchen) is a key element to modernizing a farmhouse kitchen.
'One of the easiest ways to update a farmhouse kitchen is by integrating a variety of metals,' Nina explains. 'Start with your hardware, such as cabinet handles, drawer pulls, and faucets. Brass and copper can add warmth that complements the rustic elements of a farmhouse design, while blackened steel or matte black finishes can introduce an industrial contrast, giving the space a contemporary twist. Don’t shy away from mixing these metals; the juxtaposition of different finishes creates visual interest and adds depth to the kitchen.'

She continues, 'For instance, pair brass faucets with matte black drawer pulls, or opt for stainless steel appliances contrasted against a copper range hood. The key is balance—choose one or two primary metals and introduce a third as an accent to avoid overwhelming the space.'
Balance is crucial above all else, so ensure that your farmhouse kitchen retains some of its natural components, too.
'While metals bring a contemporary flair, it’s essential to preserve the essence of a farmhouse kitchen,' Nina says. 'Incorporating natural elements, like exposed wooden beams, reclaimed wood shelves, and rustic decor, keeps the space grounded in its roots. The farmhouse style is all about blending beauty with function, and while metals add a sleek, modern edge, they must be balanced with organic materials that evoke a sense of warmth and comfort.'
With the proper mix of accessories and hardware, a modern farmhouse kitchen is an achievable (and covetable) design choice.
