Kyle MacLachlan's social media pages have become quite the destination for entertainment – and, as it turns out, unexpected home decor inspiration.

Take one of his latest TikToks, wherein he is drinking wine in his kitchen: my eyes were instantly drawn to his green extractor, an unusual yet aesthetically pleasing choice that also happens to be giving us some extractor hood ideas.

According to experts, painting an extractor is one of the best ways to add color to a kitchen, as it's just unexpected enough to have an impact, while still looking aesthetically sound.

'A colorful extractor is an unexpected accent piece that instantly adds visual interest and personality to a kitchen, especially in spaces with neutral cabinetry or minimalist layouts,' explains designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'It draws the eye upward, introduces vertical rhythm, and gives homeowners a way to make a statement without committing to a full wall of vibrant tile or brightly painted cabinets. In essence, it’s a refined rebellion – a small but powerful design choice that disrupts the expected.'

In addition to selecting the color, the shape and size of extractors are also critical factors in a kitchen's design – we love Kyle's farmhouse-esque take on the range hood, but modern silhouettes would work well, too.

'Aside from their function, colorful extractors act as sculptural centerpieces,' Nina explains.

'Whether you opt for a curvaceous, vintage-inspired model in butter yellow or a sleek, angular hood in matte navy, the piece becomes a design anchor. It can echo the tones of bar stools or pendant lights, or serve as the single pop of color in a more restrained palette, adding dimension, warmth, and a sense of curation.'

While Kyle has opted for a pure green, Nina says that sage, cobalt blue, and terracotta are all excellent color choices for extractors.

'A colorful extractor hood is a high-impact, low-commitment way to push the boundaries of a traditional kitchen,' she states. 'It’s proof that form and function can meet in the middle and do so with style. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, rustic, or eclectic, there’s a shade and silhouette that can make your range hood more than just a workhorse. It can be the soul of the kitchen.'

Call it the new accent wall, but we suspect that colorful extractors are here to stay.
