While Reese Witherspoon might have once played the girlish, pink-obsessed Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, in real life, we know her as having far more stylish and sophisticated tastes. That's why we were surprised to see her California living room decorated entirely in pink. But before you think pink isn't for you, take a look at the way Reese Witherspoon has used an array of tones and pink living room ideas to create a really inviting and elegant room.

There are certainly some design tricks to note when decorating a pink room. Head of Interiors, Hebe, says: 'While choosing one accent color for a room is effective, another clever way to spotlight a key color is by using a mix of different tones throughout the space, from barely-there pale to bold and vibrant. This way, you'll create a room that feels intentionally styled rather than being a jumble of different colors.'

There's no need to go in for bubblegum or Barbie pink to try this look. Shades vary so greatly from softest blush pink to earthy plaster, and vibrant magenta. Using a range of tones, as Reese Witherspoon has in her living room will allow you to really alter the mood of the room, too.

The actress has opted for dusky pink slipcover sofas (this Serena & Lily skirted sofa in shell pink linen is a good match), which ooze calm comfort, while she's brought in globally-inspired elements such as the woven rug and kilim-style cushions (similar are available at Joss & Main). These storied elements punctuate and add personality to the room.

The addition of some pretty pink peonies really freshens the look in Reese Witherspoon's living room, while the rustic wood table and seagrass carpet bring in natural texture and interest. She's even painted the window frames in pink to anchor the whole palette.

But, you don't have to stick rigidly to a purely pink palette, as there are plenty of other colors that go with pink, which you can weave into your scheme. Here, you can see green in the foliage, brown in the wood furniture and accessories, and hints of navy in the patterns, but choose complementary colors that you love for a confident and personalised look.

If your interest has been piqued by pink, why keep in in the living room? These pink room ideas will give you plenty of inspiration to try it out in other spaces from the kitchen to the bedroom and even the bathroom.
