Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. may be best known for his high-tech, futuristic world as Tony Stark, but his real-life home, designed by Fox-Nahem Associates, is a vibrant departure: a joyful mix of color, pattern, and inventive furniture layouts. His kitchen, playful yet contemporary, showcases one of today’s smartest kitchen seating ideas – a custom, cozy corner banquette that encourages conversation while making the most of an often-overlooked space.

The kitchen has decisively evolved into the central hub of the modern home – a place to eat, cook, socialize, work, rest, and play. As physical barriers between these separate functions merge, a comfortable, functional kitchen seating area is no longer a luxury, but a necessity.

Introducing subtle architectural features in a cooking space is also one of the best ways to make a kitchen look more expensive. Sometimes the obvious wall for a run of cabinetry ends abruptly at a window. Rather than abruptly stopping the sweep of furniture with wasted space, Kasia Piorko, founder of Kate Feather, suggests making a feature of the area with a window seat. ‘Soft seating in a family kitchen is always highly desirable, a key element of modern design,’ she says. ‘Creating a specific, dedicated spot to look out of the window onto the garden instantly brings tranquility and purpose to the overall design scheme.’

One of the big surprises in an open-plan kitchen is just how little space you need to gain enough usable room for a dining area. Often, a mere matter of feet is all you need to fit a compact solution, such as the popular banquette or bench-style seating seen in Downey Jr.'s home.

Banquette seating is the ultimate spatial solution when space is at a premium, proving superior to individual chairs for three practical reasons. Firstly, you can fit significantly more people on a bench, which is essential for modern family life. Secondly, because it is positioned flush against a wall, it drastically reduces the overall footprint of the dining area, freeing up valuable circulation space.

Finally, if your space isn’t quite as generous as Downey Jr.’s, consider a banquette with deep storage underneath – a smart way to hide bulky appliances and other clutter. Beyond practicality, a well-designed banquette also offers the perfect canvas for showcasing rich artwork, bold colors, and vibrant patterns, capturing the essence of today’s maximalist trends.

Don’t be afraid of using bold and darker colors in this area, especially in bigger spaces, to emulate the actor’s cozy atmosphere. Darker hues make the room feel more intimate in the evenings. Conversely, avoid using too much stark white as it can be too startling and will actively work against creating the inviting and relaxing social hub you've planned for.
