Sarah Michelle Gellar's kitchen cabinets are moody yet elevated – I've always used dark paint with caution, but they make bolder tones accessible
The actress's black kitchen cabinets are bold yet palatable, proving that this dark shade is a trendy yet timeless color pick

Kitchens are often designed to be light and airy; there is perhaps no palette more popular and beloved than a warm neutral. However, a dark kitchen can be moody in all the right ways, and we are looking to Sarah Michelle Gellar for inspiration.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star recently shared a clip from her kitchen, and the nearly black cabinets are shaded by a charcoal backsplash, giving us some major black kitchen ideas.
While black is certainly a bold kitchen color choice, experts say that its style benefits cannot be undermined – it is at once trendy and timeless.

According to experts, introducing black into the kitchen is one of the best ways to make a space look more chic.
'Adding black into your kitchen can be daunting, but if you are looking for a way to add an elevated and sophisticated look to your home it can be a great option, explains Michael Rolland, paint expert and managing director at The Paint Shed.
He continues, 'It's important when painting kitchens black to consider some options, firstly the size of your kitchen. If you are working with a small space, adding all-over dark paint can make the room feel even smaller as opposed to bigger. Instead, use black paint to create features within the room. Opt for painting lower cabinets black and pair them with lighter-coloured upper cabinets to avoid closing in the space.'
However, Michael encourages those of us with large, well-lit kitchens to be liberal with black paint, as these spaces can handle heavier amounts of darkness.

'In bigger, brighter spaces with a lot of natural light, embrace the dark side and paint both the kitchen cupboards and walls black,' Michael suggests. 'It is important to remember to balance out the use of black within the space, for example using metallic hardware and adding highlights with lighter colour accessories.'
With results that lean modern, contemporary, edgy, and most of all, refined, black cabinets in the kitchen are a win in our books.
