IKEA’s $35 Space-Saving Parasol Is Replacing Clunky Umbrellas – Sparing Small Patios Nearly 4 Feet of Clutter

This square-shaped shade is a big deal for small backyards

Squeezing an oversized parasol into a petite patio or balcony is a bit like squeezing yourself into skinny jeans two sizes too small – there’s no room to breathe, and it doesn’t do either of you any favors. It’s officially too hot not to own an umbrella, so the solution isn’t skipping one altogether; it’s finding one that isn’t the height of a basketball player. Answering the cries of every tiny patio owner, IKEA has one for just $35.

IKEA’s TVETÖ umbrella might not look all that different from a traditional parasol on screen. It has the square UV-protective canopy, the handy hook-and-loop strap, even a tilt function for awkward corners. The difference is its size: at just 71 inches wide, it’s nearly four feet narrower than IKEA’s classic JOGGESÖ parasol, which measures 118 inches across. For a small patio, balcony, or courtyard, that’s the difference between comfortably shaded and visually swallowed whole.

Finally: that little bistro set that’s become unbearable to look at – let alone sit at – by noon is back in business, with up to 96% of UV radiation blocked overhead.

You’ll need a separate umbrella base, but at $35, it’s hardly the hill to die on. The square canopy is really the genius part, sliding neatly against walls, fences, and into corners instead of leaving those little gaps that somehow eat up half your patio. In a small outdoor space, every inch counts – and this shade finally lets you use them all.

Turns out, your patio wasn’t too small; your umbrella was just too big. The TVETÖ slides neatly into existing dining sets and actually looks even more proportional.
