The Very British Edit: The Summer Decor Finds That Make Indoor-Outdoor Spaces Feel Like the Most Luxurious Rooms in the House
From sunrooms and conservatories to relaxed indoor-outdoor spaces, this week’s edit is all about creating light-filled rooms that feel calm, comfortable, and effortlessly connected to nature
The Opening Note
This week on The Very British Edit, I’m talking about one of my favorite summer decorating projects: creating an outdoor living room that feels just as welcoming and lived-in as the spaces inside the house. I’ve become increasingly drawn to those light-filled in-between rooms that blur the line between indoors and out – spaces designed for slow mornings, long afternoons, and relaxed evenings at home.
Lately, I’ve found myself completely immersed in designing an outdoor living room and collecting outdoor living room ideas that make these spaces feel warm, layered, and comfortable rather than overly styled. Whether you call it a sunroom, a three-season room, conservatory, enclosed patio, or indoor-outdoor sitting room, I think these spaces have become some of the most enjoyable rooms in the house during the warmer months.
Over the past few years, indoor plant styling has become a huge part of my decorating scheme, so it was only a matter of time before that same approach started influencing the way I thought about these indoor-outdoor spaces, too. Once you start bringing greenery into your interiors, you naturally begin to see the connection between the two. I found myself wanting these rooms to feel less separate from the rest of the home and more like a seamless extension of it – somewhere comfortable enough to spend an entire afternoon with a book, a coffee, or, in my case, an iced matcha.
The more I decorate, the more I realize that nature really does offer the best inspiration. I always come back to colors that already exist outdoors: soft greens, warm sandy tones, weathered wood, terracotta, muted blues, and stone grays. They’re timeless for a reason. These shades feel calming, familiar, and easy to live with, especially in spaces where natural light becomes part of the overall atmosphere.
The same goes for materials. Natural textures instantly make a room feel warmer and more inviting. Woven rattan, wicker, seagrass, linen, jute, wood, and stone all add character without overwhelming a space. I think that’s why they work so beautifully in a sunroom or conservatory. They help create a relaxed, layered look that feels collected over time rather than overly decorated.
I’ve also started paying much more attention to softer details like curtains, shades, and lighting. In a sunroom or conservatory, lightweight linen drapes or woven blinds make such a difference. They filter harsh sunlight beautifully, help regulate the temperature during warmer months, and soften the room visually without taking away from the view outside.
What I love most about these indoor-outdoor rooms is that they encourage you to slow down a little. The best ones never feel too perfect or staged – they feel entirely personal. And honestly, I think that’s what makes this style of decorating so appealing in the first place. It’s less about creating a showpiece and more about creating rooms that make you feel happier at home.

I’ve been especially drawn to sunrooms and conservatories that can be enjoyed well beyond just a few weeks of summer. Done well, they become some of the hardest-working spaces in the home – somewhere to read, entertain friends, work remotely, or simply unwind at the end of the day. And if you have pets, they often become their favorite spot to bask in the sun. My cat, Tilly, reminds me of this every day.
In this shopping edit, I’ll be sharing some of the pieces I’ve been loving this past week, from comfortable seating and woven accents to portable lighting, indoor-outdoor rugs, and decorative accessories that help create that seamless indoor-outdoor feel. Because if decorating with plants has taught me anything, it’s that our homes always feel their best when we find ways to connect them more closely to the natural world outside.

In the Queue
Next week on The Very British Edit, I’m leaning fully into summer decorating and all the little ways we can make home feel more relaxed, welcoming, and enjoyable this time of year. With the Fourth of July on the horizon, summer holidays, long weekends, and the entertaining season in full swing, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to create spaces that feel lighter, happier, and a little more fun during the warmer months.
The more I decorate my home, the more I realize how much atmosphere matters. Sometimes it’s the smallest details that completely change the mood of a room. Those playful touches instantly make a space feel more inviting and, honestly, ready to host a summer garden party or even a potluck.
I’ve also found myself gravitating toward colors and textures that make the home feel a little like a vacation. Soft greens, sandy neutrals, blue-and-white, terracotta, punchy yellows, wicker, linen, and rattan all bring that easy, relaxed summer feeling. They make spaces feel layered, welcoming, and perfect for entertaining without trying too hard.
One thing I’ve been thinking about more lately is creating spaces that feel ready for people to gather. Not formal entertaining – just the easy kind that naturally happens during summer. Friends stopping by for drinks, casual dinners that turn into late evenings, slow mornings with coffee near an open window. Those are the moments that make a home feel its best.
In next week’s shopping edit, I’ll be sharing some of the pieces I’ve been loving lately, from woven accents and portable lighting to indoor-outdoor textiles, playful accessories, and relaxed summer decor that helps create that effortless vacation-at-home feeling all season long.
