Antique sale FAQs and tips
If you've never been to an antique fair before, we appreciate that it can be a little daunting. There are a few things you need to know before heading off on your shopping trip to make the experience more seamless and stress-free.
If you are heading to a sale with a shopping list in hand, preparation is key. If you know the furniture items you want and their intended location, measure your space, and then take your measuring tape to the fair with you so you can measure the furniture and make sure whatever you buy will actually fit.
If you want to be extra prepared, it's worth checking out the vendor lists. Not all of the fair websites will offer this, but some have a full list of antique dealers and vintage sellers in attendance, so you know exactly which stalls to hit up first.
You'll need to organize delivery if you don't have a vehicle large enough. It's always worth thinking about this before the market, but some sellers will be happy to organize the transportation of large antique pieces for a small fee.
Even if you are just visiting a local fair for a fun day out or to find smaller decor, think about how you will carry it. Bring a large, comfy tote bag for smaller items, or even a shopping wagon for heavier items. This Collapsible Wagon Cart from Amazon is a sturdy and reliable choice.
And lastly, wear comfortable, practical footwear. Most of these markets are huge, so you can expect to do a lot of walking around. Make sure you check the location beforehand – in the wetter months, rain boots might be needed!
There are plenty of local fairs here to visit this September, but you might also want to visit the best US cities for antique shopping if you want to make a weekend of it. Or, if you're new to the world of vintage, get inspiration from the collectibles interior designers look out for when antique shopping.

I’ve worked in the interiors magazine industry for the past five years and joined Homes & Gardens at the beginning of 2024 as the Kitchens & Bathrooms editor. While I love every part of interior design, kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most exciting to design, conceptualize, and write about. There are so many trends, materials, colors, and playful decor elements to explore and experiment with.
