Nate Berkus says slipcovered sofas are back on trend – and I just found a way to create this designer-approved laid-back look from just $86
This classic style is making a strong comeback, but did you know you don't have to buy a whole new couch to get this Nate-approved look?

When designer Nate Berkus shares insights into the style and trends he is currently keen on, I listen. His trendy, yet timeless style is one I am always trying to achieve in my own spaces. So when he recently took to Instagram to share his thoughts on couch trends and styles, I dutifully took note.
I've seen so many Nancy Meyers-inspired living rooms come across my desk and social media feeds recently, all classic in style, and many featuring slipcovered sofas – a look that I admittedly once thought a bit too fussy and dated.
But when I saw Nate had shared his couch dos and don'ts and hailed slipcovered sofas for their practicality and timelessness, it confirmed to me this outdated furniture trend is back, and I want in.

It has taken me a while to warm to the more laid-back, coastal feel of slipcovered sofas. I think it's because until recently, I have only seen them in that setting – relaxed, 'comfy', vacation-vibe beach houses which, while beautiful, are not in line with my more urban home.
For so long, design trends have steered away from this more casual look in favor of simpler styles. But as Nate says in his Instagram post about slipcover sofas, 'They're making a comeback. I think the practicality never went away. I like adding dressmaker details like a box pleated skirt, contrast piping, or a grosgrain trim around the bottom hem.'
And they are more versatile than I first thought, too. Yes, they are very much in keeping with that country-style, Nancy Meyers aesthetic, but paired with more contemporary pieces, they work surprisingly well in a transitional space. And that's the look I am after – a cozy slipcovered sofa mixed in with my modern, slightly more curated style.
It is, of course, an investment to buy a new couch, but in my search to buy one myself, I have found that there's a far cheaper and low-commitment way to get this laid-back look – a sofa cover that can create that slipcovered look on almost any couch.

So I am going to follow Nate's advice, but rather than dive right in with a new slipcovered couch, I am going to try out the look first with a new cover for my current couch. There are so many beautiful options online, you will definitely find something to suit the dimensions and style of your current couch, but here are the three I am considering.
You can't beat a white linen sofa, and this durable slipcover option makes committing to a pale shade far less scary. Available in a range of sizes, this cover will transform a drab couch into a stylish piece that instantly creates the look of a slipcovered couch.
A stylish yet practical choice, this heavy cotton slipcover feels timeless in style with its pinstripes and charming bows. Pair with a set of colorful cushions or a textured boucle throw for a cozy, transitional style seating arrangement.
And when I am ready to commit to a new couch, these will be the first slipcovered sofas I consider. If you are ready to invest in this style, it's worth knowing that the Way Day sale is happening right now, and they have some lovely, affordable options.
What's more timeless than a striped sofa? This rolled arm sofa feels like it belongs in a Nancy Meyers film set; it's so classic in style. Combined with the slipcover functionality, you needn't worry about keeping guests at bay.
This sofa is covered in a white boucle fabric. A minimalist's dream, this is the perfect blank canvas that will pair well with practically any accessory, whether scattering some warm velvet cushions or pairing an antique table at its side.
This timeless sofa will disguise any dirt or stains with its chic yet practical gray cover. Elevate the piece with a pair of bright cushions for a bold yet considered arrangement that mirrors Nate's thoughtful design style.
If you're tight on space, a slipcovered loveseat may be the answer. Designed for two, this adorable pale blue sofa feels nautical yet neutral, the perfect piece if you're looking to emulate that timeless American look.
Despite its associations with the end of the last century, slipcover sofas are definitely '90s design trend making a comeback in 2025. Slipcovers are the answer to the age-old struggle between function and aesthetics and make choosing a sofa an exciting game of dress up.
