I Never Thought I Would See This Tacky Christmas Trend Make a Comeback, But Decades Later, We Are All Loving the Shimmering Charm of Tinsel – Here’s How Designers Say to Use It in 2025
With nostalgic Christmas interiors at the forefront of this year's holiday trends, tinsel decor is ready to reclaim its spot in our homes
Growing up, tinsel Christmas decor was a big no-go in my family home. According to my mother, its shimmery, borderline tacky appearance reminded her too much of the garish Christmas displays that she encountered as a kid, and from then on, she swore she'd never decorate with tinsel.
I guess you could say I've been sheltered from this kitschy Christmas decor idea my entire life. But now that I have my own spaces to decorate, I've found myself drawn to this nostalgia, and yes, just a little bit tacky holiday decor, and at just the right time, too. Tinsel is gearing up to be one of the biggest Christmas trends of this holiday season, all thanks to our current appreciation for the decor of Christmases past.
'Tinsel scratches the itch for nostalgia and sparkle without committing to full-blown maximalism,' interior designer Lauren Saab explains. 'We are all looking for decorative elements that give a sense of celebration and joy, particularly given the prolonged minimalistic approach that has dominated the holiday season over the past several years. The current trend in retro design and vintage Christmas tree styles will keep tinsel in the spotlight due to its instant nostalgic and playful connotation.'
Individual tinsel strands hung from Christmas tree branches have a way of making any holiday display look even more magical. Try it for yourself by draping these Metallic Silver Christmas Tinsel Icicles from your Christmas tree.
Tinsel feels youthful, fresh, and perfectly imperfect. It's a decor choice that embodies the magic of the Christmas season with each of its shimmering strands. But if the past has anything to teach us, it's that tinsel can easily turn tacky if not displayed in the right way. To avoid the overwhelming, tasteless look that turned my mother off from tinsel years ago, Lauren says that in 2025, we're using tinsel with intention.
'Clusters of dense, carefully curated tinsel will create a lot of shine without a lot of chaos,' Lauren says. 'The metallic strands should catch light, not overwhelm it.' Be thoughtful about how you group tinsel strands on your Christmas tree. Using it in moderation will yield the best result.
Although we most commonly see tinsel strands adorning trees, there are lots of other ways to decorate with this material for the holiday season. 'Tinsel garlands are a festive touch for stair railings and banisters, as well as draped on fireplace mantels,' interior designer Jennifer Jones recommends. 'I also love the idea of filling glass hurricanes with ornaments and tinsel to serve as a centerpiece in your holiday tablescape.'
Tinsel can also be a stylish Christmas wreath idea. 'Add layers of tinsel to a wreath to give it a polished, vintage sparkle without overwhelming the greenery,' Lauren suggests.

Decorate your mantel this holiday season with a colorful tinsel display featuring Anthropologie's Golden Tinsel Garland, Good Cheer Bauble Ornament Tinsel Garland, and the brand's Tinsel Flower Light-Up Garland.
Color is an important factor to consider when decorating with tinsel, too. Jennifer recommends sticking to neutral metallics like gold or silver tinsel to create the most stylish and tasteful holiday displays. 'Opting for a monochromatic color scheme will keep it tasteful, not tacky,' she remarks.
However, you certainly can decorate with colorful tinsel – just remember Lauren's advice about intentionality. Choose color schemes that complement the existing decor in your home, and remember that because of its reflective, sparkling qualities, a little tinsel goes a long way.
'When you spread tinsel everywhere, it can start to look messy fast,' Lauren points out. Use it within reason and 'allow tinsel to be the only reflective moment,' she says. This way, you can create a nostalgic and inviting Christmas display that won't feel overwhelming or overly kitschy.

Colorful or neutral, hung on the tree or strung down a staircase railing, tinsel can enhance your Christmas decor display in a visually appealing manner while tapping into the nostalgic feeling that we so love about the holiday season.
If you want to give this retro trend a go, I've curated a selection of 12 tinsel decor finds that shimmer with style. But remember – use tinsel in moderation and be intentional with your styling. This way, your home will look tasteful instead of tacky.
Measuring 24" in length, this string of silver tinsel trim is perfect for looping around your Christmas tree or weaving through an evergreen garland display. It'll add the perfect touch of sophisticated shimmer without feeling too bold.
If you like to go the extra mile when decorating for the holiday season, why not hang a gold tinsel chandelier in the center of your room? Sure, it seems absurd, but this chandelier can set the scene for all sorts of holiday parties and keep the festive energy alive in the chicest way possible.
It's like an abstract floral arrangement, but made from tinsel – this 3-tip spray is a fresh and modern way to add tinsel to your home. Drop it in a large flower vase and place it on any tabletop surface to make any corner of your home shimmer in style.
Want to test the tinsel waters before diving head first? Here's how to do it – get yourself a package of individual tinsel strands, like this gold variation, and start incorporating them onto your Christmas tree. If you like the shimmering, draping look, consider adding more until your tree feels complete.
During the holiday season, there's no better way to welcome guests into your home than with a chic holiday wreath. With its silver strands, this tinsel wreath is a stylish option. It's not overly decorated, or too shiny. Instead, its silver strands shine with refined elegance and sleek holiday charm.
This mini tinsel tree is a stylish Christmas decoration that can invite some color into any corner of your home. Its gold tinsel base and branches set the scene for a colorful display of Christmas ornaments. And because of its small size, it won't overwhelm your space with its bold style. Instead, it'll act as a tasteful, playfully nostalgic complement.
Invite some festive energy into your home with this colorful tinsel garland. Hang it anywhere – from a mantel, against a wall, or around a door frame – and its glistening strands will elevate the atmosphere of the room. Because of its red and pink color combination, you can use it for any holiday – Christmas, Valentine's Day, or even birthday parties.
Tassel details seem to be creeping their way into style, with designers like Shea McGee including them in their holiday decor collections (I'm obsessed with this McGee & Co. Bullion Tassel Ornament). Try the trend for yourself with this tiered tinsel tassel (say that five times fast). It can add some shimmering sparkle to any doorknob, cabinet pull, or tree branch.
Designed as complementary details for Anthropologie's Stargazer Garden Lights, these tinsel reflectors are an easy way to create a bright display of color on your Christmas tree. Even if you don't have string lights to attach them to, these reflectors can loop onto a tree branch and act as ornaments of their own.
Like a tiered, shimmering tutu for your Christmas tree, this tinsel tree collar is a sight to behold. It can turn the base of your tree into the main attraction of your holiday display while hiding the tree stump. Plus, it rolls up for convenient storage throughout the rest of the year.
Here's a festive way to decorate your staircase this holiday season. This gold tinsel strand is tastefully adorned with colorful baubles that can add some lively spirit to any railing. Loop it around the banister to ring in some Christmas cheer.
This holiday season, try something different than the typical star or angel at the top of your Christmas tree. Opt for a tinsel snowflake, instead. Made with silver tinsel strands and colorful string lights around the perimeter, this snowflake can serve as the perfect finishing touch to your holiday display.
While some love it and others (like my mother) loathe it, one thing is certain – tinsel Christmas decor isn't a fad of the past. With its evocative, nostalgic charm, this shimmering, shiny material will always have a place as a Christmas decorating tradition.
