The Effortless Affordable Lighting Swap That’s Made My Bedroom Feel Like a Hotel Suite – And I Installed It Myself For Under $100
If I had known I could create this look so cheaply, I would have done it years ago
I love my nighttime routine, the hour or so before sleep that I can truly relax. And my bedside setup is a key player, it's where I house everything I need within easy reach – skincare, books, phone, drinks. I have my bedside tablescaping down to an art.
But I have never managed to perfect the bedroom lighting. I want something right there next to me so I can read and scroll and sip my tea, but it needs to be soft and compact. My bedside light just wasn't cutting it, and the visible wire wasn’t adding anything aesthetically.
Of course, I toyed with the idea of a portable lamp (I just added the viral Addison Ross Bobbin Lamp to my bathroom and it’s totally changed the vibe in there), but during my shopping research, I found something even better: wireless, battery-powered sconces. Specifically, these Rattan Battery Operated Wall Sconces from Wayfair. Beautiful, hotel-worthy wall lights that could flank either side of my headboard, adding a soft, symmetrical glow. And the best part? No electrician needed.
I have rattan shades all over my home; they add another layer of texture and diffuse the light beautifully. So when I saw these rattan sconces, I knew they would be perfect to sit on either side of my headboard. Currently, in the Wayfair Black Friday sale, these sconces come in a set of two, and you can easily install them yourself. It comes with a remote control, perfect for me being able to switch them off from the comfort of my bed.
I say not having to pay someone to hardwire these sconces is the best part, but the price of some of these easy-to-install designs is almost unbelievable. I would have thought having wall lights installed in my bedroom would have cost nothing shy of $500. But thanks to the Black Friday sales happening right now, there are tons of options that make this look easy to achieve for under $100.
I love the hotel feel these sconces give my bedroom; there's something about symmetrical wall lights that feels very luxurious. But these easy-to-install designs could work anywhere – either side of a vanity mirror, to add soft lighting to a kitchen, or make more of a focal point of a console in an entryway.
Shop Battery Operated Wall Sconces
During my hunt, I came across hundreds of options for cheap battery-powered wall sconces. Wayfair, in particular, had some gems, and I was so shocked at how cheaply you could find them on Amazon(these black vintage-style lights are only $35 for two!). If you’re after something a bit more luxe, West Elm had a couple of beautiful designs, and of course, I have to mention the queens of portable lighting, Pooky, who have a rechargeable Genesis cell that you can use to turn so many of their gorgeous designs wireless.
Simply charge this light with a USB cable, no hardwiring required. It comes with a remote control and adjustable light settings. You can pick from warm or cool, dim as you please, and use the timer to personalize when you would like them to turn off (this function can be ideal for using as a nightlight in the bathroom).
'These wall sconces are amazing. They add such a warm, modern touch to our space without needing any wiring,' reads just one of thousands of reviews for this set of sconces. Simple and elegant, these lights would give any bedroom a hotel feel, or make a bathroom vanity look more expensive in an instant.
More of an investment than my other finds, but with West Elm, you are paying for great quality, not just aesthetics. The antique brass finish and simple silhouette are timeless. Just be aware you charge this directly from the light, so although it's wireless, you will need it to be near(ish) a plug for charging.
I can't think of a purchase I’ve made recently that's changed a room more drastically (apart from the portable lamp I just bought for my bathroom). Lighting can totally change the feel of a room, especially at this time of year when we are all about the soft pools of cozy light. If I had known I could achieve such a luxurious effect without spending much or calling an electrician, I would have done this so much sooner.
