The moment the bitter winter chill gave way to intermittently bright and mild spring weather, my high-tog duvet, which had kept me so cozy in winter, felt suffocating. However, I’ve since got my hands on the cooling IKEA GRÄSROTSFLY, and I have been so impressed.

Not only have I fallen asleep quickly underneath it for the last few weeks of testing, instead of tossing and turning in uncomfortable stuffiness, but I no longer wake up in the middle of the night, or first thing in the morning, in a panic of heat and sweat.

Why I am So Impressed with the IKEA GRÄSROTSFLY Insert

Not only is it cooling, but it has some kind of wizardry that keeps me comfortably cozy overnight, whatever the rising temperatures. More on this wax-coated viscose magic later.

It has brought me the perfect combination of thermoregulation for spring, when we’re not yet at sweltering temperatures, but certain nights can feel as balmy as a summer’s day and heatwaves are now sneakig in.

After testing it in my home for a few weeks, I no longer wake up in a panic of heat. I have also found it possible to sleep better and more restfully through the night under this cover and have been drifting off with ease.

I was recently inspired to swap my heavier 7.5 winter insert with this 2.5 tog one from IKEA because it was also this brand that saw me through the coldest months with hotel-style comfort.

My cruelty-free down alternative IKEA SÄFFEROT winter insert was so affordable, but felt fluffy like a premium insert that instantly made my husband and me agree it was the best duvet insert we’d ever owned.

So, of course when it was time to pack away our heavier bedding, I turned to IKEA once again for an affordable spring sleep reset. I’m so glad I did.

What Happened When I Tested the GRÄSROTSFLY

In a nutshell, I now fall asleep quickly, don’t wake up drenched in sweat, and sleep till my alarm for a lack of overheating disturbing me early in the morning. It's all down to this insert.

Of course, the cooling effect of the silky lyocell cover, and the vegan filler (90% polyester / 10% viscose, which increases the item’s thermoregulation qualities) has helped deliver the perfect spring sleep experience.

I found it interesting as well that I didn’t wake up cold at any point either. Ottilie Blackhall, Sleep Editor here at Homes & Gardens explains, ‘That’s thanks to the wax-infused viscose fibers, which soak up excess body heat when you have it, and release it when your body temperature drops again.’

This means if despite being cool enough to fall asleep (that drop in body temperature is vital to allow you to drift off), you won't wake up shivering later.

Now, as heatwaves loom and the mercury rises, I highly recommend this item for soothing, cooling slumber that doesn’t make you feel like you’re either on fire, or shivering under your AC or fan.

It’s safe to wash and dry in your machine at home, and so thin, I was able to load some towels alongside it in the morning and found it air-dried by late afternoon over our stair railing. I didn’t hang it outside to air dry to avoid pollen sticking to it and causing allergies and sniffling overnight.

I also ran it on another wash cycle and through the dryer to check if it would shrink, bunch or otherwise get ruined, and there was zero negative impact. The items is actually deemed suitable by IKEA for use in inns and B&Bs for its robust construction which withstand high volumes of washes.

It’s machine-washable at 140°F, a temperature that kills dust mites.

My Verdict on IKEA's Cooling GRÄSROTSFLY

For cool, comfortable nights, look no further. This is the affordable low tog (figure out what’s the perfect number for you in our dedicated spring tog guide) savior for spring and summer.

Under it, there will be no sweating or chills: It gives that sleeping without a cover light-as-air feeling without the achey neck and back in the morning that comes from going without.
