Easy-to-follow outdoor maintenance calendar – these month-by-month instructions will help you stay on top of vital home to-dos
From clearing gutters to prepping windows and doors, we've got you covered

Keeping your home's interior intact is vital, so our simple 12-month outdoor maintenance calendar helps prevent damage, saves you money, and protects your property's curb appeal and functionality without overwhelming you in the process.
Too often, outdoor tasks are left until something goes wrong, whether it’s a flooded gutter, a cracked patio, or a drafty door. By tackling one key, outdoor job each month, you can avoid last-minute emergencies, pesky issues, and costly repairs.
When it comes to essential DIY tips, this month-by-month guide is designed to make outdoor upkeep feel achievable rather than overwhelming. Each task is chosen for its seasonal relevance so you can focus on what needs to be done most each month.
Your easy-to-follow outdoor maintenance calendar
June: Inspect and clear gutters
Inspecting and clearing your gutters is the first task on your outdoor maintenance calendar.
Summer storms can clog gutters with debris, particularly if they haven't been cleaned regularly, and is top of the list when it comes to gutter cleaning mistakes. Clearing them out in the middle of the year prevents water damage and maintains proper drainage.
Jim Marino, CEO of Pinnacle Home Improvements, says, 'Before summer storms get well underway, make sure to check your gutter system. Look for damage and make any repairs, cleaning them out thoroughly, including downspouts, to ensure proper water flow away from your home. With heavy rains, you don’t want water pooling around your foundation or on your roof.'
Karina Toner, operations manager at Spekless Cleaning, says, 'Spring blossoms and pollen can clog gutters, and you’ll want them clear before heavy summer rain. Avoid working from high ladders without stabilization – use a curved gutter cleaning attachment for easier reach.'
Toner recommends the Orbit Telescoping Gutter Cleaning Wand from Amazon, adding, 'It has great reach and water pressure control, so you can clean safely from the ground.'
If you're unsure how high you need to be able to reach from the ground, a waterproof outdoor laser measuring device from Mileseey Tools can help and will be a very handy gadget if you enjoy renovating your yard.
July: Inspect lawn equipment
Maintaining your lawn equipment is critical, especially in the month of July.
Warm temperatures accelerate grass growth. Even if you took part in 'No Mow May', regular mowing and watering is crucial to keep your lawn healthy and lush – so well-maintained equipment is essential.
Andy Wu, founder of Backyard Oasis, says, 'Peak growth time demands regular mowing, and well-kept equipment. Mow early or late in the day to prevent heat stress, and never cut lower than three inches – short grass invites weeds.'
Wu recommends the GreenWorks 40V Cordless Lawn, available from Amazon, for its quiet, eco-friendly power. The Segmart Cordless Electric Lawn Mower from Walmart is a highly effective but cheaper alternative.
Toner says, 'This is a good time to inspect your mower as it will likely have been busy! Change the spark plug and sharpen your blades. Avoid using dull mower blades – they tear grass and cause browning.'
The Briggs & Stratton Mower Maintenance Kit from Amazon is Toner's preferred choice. She adds, 'This is a convenient all-in-one solution for tune-ups.'
August: Refresh outdoor lighting
August is your time to check and refresh your outdoor lighting.
Long evenings are perfect for enjoying your garden. Whether you're looking to follow the latest garden lighting trends, or simply add some evening ambience to your yard, updating and cleaning your lighting enhances ambiance and safety.
Toner says, 'At this time of year, the days are still long, but early sunsets are coming – make sure your exterior lighting is ready. Replace or recharge bulbs where necessary, and clean light covers thoroughly for maximum brightness. Avoid using high-wattage bulbs that can overheat outdoor fixtures.'
Toner recommends the LEONLITE LED Outdoor Wall Light from Amazon, which gives a classy up-lighting and down-lighting effect. She adds, 'It's energy-saving and weatherproof, so reliable for seasonal changes.'
Cleaning your solar lights will keep them operating well for months.
September: Tackle pest prevention
September is a good time to protect the perimeter of your home from pests.
As temperatures begin to cool, pests like spiders, ants, and rodents start seeking warmth indoors. September is the ideal time to create a protective barrier around your home’s exterior to prevent mice getting in, as well as other common indoor pests.
Start by sealing any cracks around doors, windows, vents, and the foundation. Clear leaves and debris from around the base of your house, as these damp, dark spaces attract insects. Trim back shrubs or plants touching the house to remove natural 'bridges' pests use to gain access to your home, including the roof, attic and eaves.
Consider using a perimeter pest spray or granules rated safe for pets and children. This step can help reduce the number of unwanted guests as the colder months approach. Our experts recommend Raid Max Bug Killer Perimeter Protection Bug Spray, available from Target, which protects against more than 15 types of insects, and remains effective for over a year.
For a chemical-free approach, try planting pest-repelling plants like mint or lavender near entry points. Prevention now means fewer problems later – and avoids the need for costly extermination services during winter.
October: Clear the leaves
Clearing leaves from walkways, lawns and driveways is important for both aesthetics and safety.
Fallen leaves can smother your grass or driveway and become slippery. Regular raking or leaf blowing maintains lawn health and safety.
Marino says, 'Regular raking prevents damage to your lawn and also keeps your walkways from becoming slippery and dangerous. You can rake or use a blower to get the leaves out of the way, but don’t skip bagging them up and disposing of them.'
Marino recommends the Leisch Cordless Leaf Blower from Amazon, which is one of the most affordable on the market, and has a rechargeable battery.
Toner recommends using a model with adjustable speeds, such as the Greenworks 40V Leaf Blower from Amazon, which is lightweight and has a variable speed dial. A lower speed is best for delicate surfaces like gravel driveways, while higher speeds work well on solid concrete or asphalt to make your driveway look more inviting.
Our look at the many surprising but useful uses for a leaf blower has more tips and tricks to making use of this essential tool year-round.
November: Seal the house perimeter
November is a wise time to check and seal your home's perimeter, ahead of the cold winter months.
Inspecting and sealing gaps prevents drafts and deters pests seeking warmth in the winter.
Marino says, 'Caulking around the perimeter or checking weatherstripping can go a long way to winterizing your home. You’ll want to remember to insulate as needed to ensure your home is protected from winter’s icy wrath.'
Merino recommends the Red Devil Extreme Duty Caulk Gun, available from Amazon, which has an ergonomic rubber trigger, and a 26:1 thrust ratio.
December: Protect outdoor faucets
December is a good time for faucet maintenance.
Protecting faucets prevents freezing and potential pipe bursts during cold snaps.
Toner says, 'Prevent costly pipe bursts and frost damage by installing faucet covers and wrapping exposed pipes. This Frost King Outdoor Faucet Cover from Amazon is great. It comes in a four-pack, is easy to install, and it protects faucets from freezing temperatures.'
Still unsure on the best outdoor faucet protection? Our guide on 'Hard vs soft faucet covers' is the best place to start.
January: Monitor ice and snow
January is an important time for monitoring ice and snow around your home.
Regularly clearing snow and ice from paths ensures safety and prevents slips.
Toner says, 'Ice and snow can damage surfaces and structures. Safe Paw Ice Melter from Amazon is a great option for driveways. It's effective, non-toxic, and safe for pets and plants.'
Knowing how to correctly apply ice melt is key, and how to remove icicles can come in handy too.
Wu adds, 'Snow early in the winter can also create ice dams on your roof. To safely rake yours, avoiding dangerous climbs, the USA Handy Tools Deluxe American Made Snow Roof Rake, available from roofrake.com, is a lifesaver.'
February: Trim trees
Trim trees in February as part of your outdoor maintenance calendar.
Pruning trees in February whilst they are in dormancy promotes healthy growth and removes hazardous branches, but most importantly prevents pests from hitching a ride into your home.
Toner says, 'Overgrown trees can provide the perfect pathway for rodents and other pests to invade your home, with the attic being a particularly popular nesting spot, so cutting them back at least annually is well worth the time and effort.
'Dormant trees are easier and safer to prune, so February is an ideal time to tackle them. Just remember to avoid heavy pruning in freezing temps – it can shock the tree.'
For plants, ivy, clematis and wisteria are just some of the many plants you should prune in February.
Spring's approach is the perfect time to assess your landscaping and cut back any overgrowth before the increasing heat encourages rapid plant growth – just watch out for common tree pruning mistakes.
Toner recommends the Fiskars Extendable Tree Pruner from Amazon, adding, 'It makes high cuts manageable without a ladder.'
March: Revive and protect your patio
March is a good time to seal your patio and prevent weeds rising through any cracks.
March is the perfect month to breathe life back into your patio or deck area after the wear and tear of winter.
Start by sweeping off debris, then inspect for signs of mildew, grime, or surface damage. Pressure wash your patio to remove dirt buildup and help prevent slippery spots.
Once clean, check for cracked paving stones, loose decking boards, or rusted furniture and repair as needed. For wooden patios or decks, consider resealing or staining before the weather heats up. The Masonry Defender Patio Paver Sealer from Walmart provides an acrylic, glossy finish.
This is also a smart time to spray patio cracks with weed inhibitor and lay fresh mulch or gravel in surrounding areas to discourage pests and weeds from taking hold in the gaps.
Ortho GroundClear Weed and Grass Killer from Amazon is fast-acting, and rain-proof within two hours. A bit of prep now sets the stage for an enjoyable, low-maintenance outdoor season ahead.
April: Pressure wash your driveway
April is a good time to pressure wash your driveway.
Removing grime and mildew rejuvenates surfaces and enhances curb appeal.
Marino says, 'Get out there with a hose-end and clean your deck, patio, and siding to freshen things up ahead of summer. Pressure washing can also help, though avoid using a high setting. You’ll also want to check for cracks in your siding first – you don’t want to cause water damage underneath your panels.'
Kärcher Concrete & Driveway Cleaner from Amazon is powerful, biodegradable, and highly concentrated, so makes up to 40 gallons of cleaning solution. Marino also swears by Wet & Forget Outdoor Moss, Mold, Mildew, & Algae Stain Remover from Amazon, which is bleach-free and has a new, improved nozzle.
For pressure washing, Toner recommends the Westinghouse Electric Pressure Washer from Amazon, while this Greenworks Corded Electric Pressure Washer from Target is an affordable alternative.
Consider also sealing your driveway. MasonryDefender Store's Concrete Sealer from Amazon protects against pitting and cracking, while for asphalt, Black Jack Drive-Maxx Sealer from Walmart is a reliable option.
May: Inspect exterior paintwork
Inspect your home's exterior paintwork in May to prevent issues like mold or wood rot.
May’s mild weather makes it a great time to assess your home’s exterior paint and siding. Walk around your property and look for peeling paint, water stains, mold, or signs of wood rot – all of which can compromise your home’s protection against the elements.
Use a scraper and wire brush to remove flaking paint, then sand the area smooth. The VQJTCVLY Mini Cordless Rotary Tool from Walmart can do multiple jobs, including sanding and polishing, and its cordless design means you can easily use it around the outside of your home. It comes with more than 50 accessories, all within a neat toolbox.
Spot-prime any bare wood or patched spots before repainting. Rust-Oleum's ZINSSER Stain Blocking Primer, available from Amazon, is a white primer that works on all surfaces.
Even small touch-ups can help prevent moisture damage, heat damage in the summer and insect intrusion. For vinyl or composite siding, a mild detergent and soft-bristled brush or pressure washer can remove grime and mildew.
