A surprising couch color can be the secret to a stylish living space. We've seen unexpected red take over in the last few months, but now there's a new shade in town – we're taking inspiration from Ashley Tisdale and her ochre sofa.

The actress turned lifestyle mogul (she is the owner of the wellness brand Frenshe, as well as its home offshoot, Frenshe Interiors), recently posted a photo to her Instagram page of her living room, and we were taken by the subtle sunshine of her sofa, which complements the white, fluted walls and framed artwork.

The refined variation on yellow is a color trend that experts say is big for 2024.

Ever the optimistic color, yellow room ideas are reminiscent of sunshine and sunflowers; however, for those of us who prefer more muted or neutral hues, shades such as ochre and mustard are the solution when decorating with yellow.

'When it comes to selecting energizing colors in your home, bright and bold hues like yellow can stimulate the senses,' says Patricia Gibbons, head of buying at 'Yellow is ideal for living room schemes due to its uplifting qualities, and is a color we are seeing emerge as a go-to for injecting joy, optimism and personality, especially for living room sofa ideas.'

Below, we have sourced an ochre sofa and accompanying decor pieces for this chic trend.

As far as colors that go with yellow, Gibbons says that it's best to keep the palette neutral to let a furniture piece really shine.

'No matter which hue you choose, if your sofa is the main pop of color in the living room, remember to balance this out with complementary colors so the upholstery doesn’t become overpowering,' Gibbons says. 'Neutral room ideas, such as cream walls, pair especially well with yellows, and can help the sofa become a focal point of the room rather than a siren.'

We love how Tisdale has maintained visual interest by placing her ochre sofa in front of a cream, fluted background.

Gibbons also recommends surrounding the statement piece with neutral decor; Tisdale has done so via a guitar placed in the corner, as well as with a warming wood table topped with books.

'To balance out this eye-catching look, opt for neutral scatter cushions and other accessories in more muted colors,' she suggests.

As well as yellow being a wonderful choice for upholstery, yellow paint is also having a revival for room color ideas in 2024, we round up the best yellow paints, as recommended by interior designers, in our dedicated feature.
