Courteney Cox's kitchen taps into this stylish (and practical) design trend – experts say it's perfect for small spaces
The actress's minimalist kitchen is kept tidy thanks to open shelving units, which also double as storage for displaying decorative items

Courteney Cox may be most frequently associated with the color-drenched, New York City apartment inhabited by her character, Monica Geller on Friends. When it comes to the actor's California home, however, the atmosphere is much more modern and serene.
Those who follow the Scream star on Instagram will be privy to her minimal, zen home, which features plenty of natural materials and light. Her latest post offers a glimpse into her kitchen, where one feature in particular stands out.
Wood fixtures make their mark amidst a black backsplash; however, it's the open shelves that we are drawn to. Displaying a variety of stone figures, Cox proves that these storage units are perfect for large or small kitchens alike.

As Cox proves, open shelving units combine function and style. While she has opted to display decor, open shelves in the kitchen can be used for practical accessories (which can then be taken up a notch depending on styling methods).
'The great thing about displaying kitchen items in open shelving is that they can instantly bring color, texture, and interest to a space,' says Catherine Jacob, Head of Design at Hovia. 'For example, use it to display your spices. From the warming shades of turmeric, nutmeg, and paprika to refreshing basil and mouth-watering mint, adding transparent spice containers to this shelf can bring color and energy to an otherwise unused space.'
In order to keep shelves looking neat and tidy, Jacob recommends planning out which objects will be displayed prior to placing them on the storage units.
'To make the most of your shelving, estimate how many containers you’ll need and then opt for ones that can sit practically alongside each other on the shelf while also looking aesthetically pleasing,' she says.

Additionally, the intentionality behind styling a floating or open shelf makes it a no-brainer for small kitchens, where surface storage space may be limited.
'Open shelves aren’t to be underestimated when it comes to storage solutions for small kitchens,' Jacob says. 'The fact that you have to consciously select the item that fits in this space means that the presentation of it becomes purposeful; it’s a statement feature on the wall. Open shelves are a great option for items you use most frequently, as it allows them to be readily accessible, whilst also keeping worktops clear of clutter… what’s not to love!'
A classic for a reason, these dinner plates are essential dining accessories.
These colorful glasses look beautiful with stems reminiscent of gemstones.
Add a pop of color to morning routines with these multi-color cereal bowls.
We recommend styling open shelves in the kitchen with functionality first while also considering how items will look. For example, colorful cereal bowls fit the bill as they are everyday items but look visually appealing in a vibrant form. Additional options include unique glassware or stackable plates.
