Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr.'s home, designed by Nicolò Bini, stands as an aerodynamic and environmentally conscious masterpiece. Its drought-tolerant outdoor space is just as remarkable as the interior, offering a contemporary yet tranquil sanctuary.

This naturalistic garden, envisioned by landscape designer Ana Saavedra, was crafted to chime beautifully with the surrounding Californian terrain. As we move through the spring of 2026, the space feels particularly vibrant, with native flora beginning to bloom against the home’s unique curves.

For Downey Jr., it was vital to mimic the residence’s organic aesthetic, ensuring the pool blended into the landscape rather than standing out. The final result is a garden pool retreat that feels entirely at home in its environment.

The first thing to note about this pool area is its fluid, curvaceous design, which mirrors the organic nature of the surrounding greenery. ‘In an awkwardly shaped garden, a pool with a free-flowing design will make the most of the space,’ says Janine Pattison of JPS Landscape Design. Such designs are ideal for large gardens intended to replicate the effortless flow of nature.

If you prefer clean lines and symmetry, consider using seasonal planting to fill the uneven gaps left around straight edges. It is worth noting that an irregular pool shape is more difficult to cover; be prepared for more heat loss if left exposed, or invest in a bespoke cover.

In a sprawling backyard like Downey Jr.'s, there is enough scope to position the pool away from the main house, creating a dedicated environment for the water feature. Landscaper and designer Andy Sturgeon suggests disguising the pool behind a low wall or hedge to help it recede into the area.

‘Plant around one or two edges of the pool, to make it into a proper garden feature and to bring the flowers and foliage – or lawn – up close to the swimmers,’ says Andy. When selecting shrubs for privacy, layering is the most effective strategy. ‘When using shrubs and other plants for privacy screening around pools – layering is key,’ says pool expert Rafi Friedman, from Coastal Luxury Outdoors.

‘Plant low-growing plants closer to the pool, and add successive layers of taller shrubs as you move towards your lot line. The multiple layers will provide better privacy than any one row of plants.’

Planting in this manner is an effective way to create garden screening that offers a sense of enclosure, transforming the area into a secluded escape. The surrounding patio deck is another fundamental element. A timber deck is a handsome, hard-wearing surface that complements most settings. As a natural material, it provides a sympathetic background to spring blossoms, blending beautifully with water, stone, and trees.

Beyond aesthetics, decks are relatively lightweight compared to stone, quick to install, and forgiving to the touch. This makes them a perfect choice for an outdoor space designed to be at one with nature.

For a truly cohesive garden design, try coupling a timber deck with natural stone. The result is a low-maintenance backyard pool landscape that is functional, calm, and effortlessly elegant for the 2026 season.
