When We Say Gray is Out, We Don't Mean Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl – 'It's a Rare Color That Feels Quietly Dynamic Rather Than Static'
Designers might be ditching grays, but that doesn't include Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl
Gray might be a little controversial in the design world as of late, falling from its early 2000s fame, and frequently topping lists of colors to avoid using in 2026. But that's not to say it's been officially scrapped for good.
While lackluster charcoals and mid-tone cold grays might no longer be the go-to neutrals of choice, not all gray paint is on the way out. Paint colors like Gray Owl (one of Benjamin Moore's most popular neutral tones) are proof that there is such a thing as complex, liveable grays that feel subtle, quietly grounding, and still interesting in 2026.
'Gray Owl is a light grey with a cool, crisp cast,' explains Helen Shaw, Director of Marketing (International), Benjamin Moore. 'This subtle silver-like hue offers a soft and refined luminosity that instantly brightens a room. Its cool undertones provide a more modern and crisp appearance than other greys, making it a hue that is especially suited to contemporary urban settings.'
Here's how designers are using this timeless Benjamin Moore gray paint.
1. Apply It To Kitchen Cabinetry and Surround with Textures
Gray Owl brings subtle depth to this light-filled kitchen designed by Heydt Designs.
'Gray Owl is one of those rare colors that feels quietly dynamic rather than static,' explains interior designer Leigha Heydt, founder of Heydt Designs. 'I think it is at its best when paired with natural materials that reinforce its quiet, organic character.'
'I love combining it with white oak, walnut, natural stone, linen, wool, handcrafted ceramics, and warm metals like unlacquered brass,' Leigha continues. 'Layering texture rather than introducing too many competing colors allows the subtle complexity of the paint to shine and creates spaces that feel relaxed, welcoming, and enduring.'
'One of Gray Owl's greatest strengths is its flexibility. It pairs beautifully with warm whites, earthy greens, muted blues, charcoal accents, and natural wood tones. Because its undertones shift so gracefully with the light, it bridges both warm and cool palettes, making it an incredibly versatile foundation for a home.'

2. Use Gray Owl as a Timeless Exterior Color
Timeless and enduring, Gray Owl is a classic paint color that works for exteriors as well as interiors.
'I would describe Gray Owl as a versatile hue that can go many different directions, depending on what is paired with it,' says Alison Arrington, founder of The Design Room. 'It has a subtle green/blue undertone, but is softened and appears warmer when paired with White Dove (as shown in this picture).'
'I chose this color for an exterior paint because the project has a Cape Cod vibe, which this color is perfect for. I used dark navys, light sea greens, and cream tones throughout the home, which act as perfect compliments coming from the outside where Gray Owl was used. One thing you will notice is that the stone that I chose has very similar tones to Gray owl, as well as creams and beiges. This was one way to sway the paint color to appear warmer than it would have if it was paired with cooler tones. I prefer to bring warmth. It tends to be more cozy and livable.'
When using gray in 2026, always pair it with organic textures. 'Other tones and materials that look great with this color,' says Alison. 'Light to medium rift oak, stone with multi-tones that have this color as well as creams and beiges, dark wood tones complement it also.'
3. Color Drench a Living Room
Gray Owl brings a light, bright, and gentle feel to this open plan living room.
While there are times not to paint a room gray, in homes blessed with natural light, it's a clever shade to use as your main wall color. 'We selected it for every painted surface in the home, including the walls, trim, doors, and windows, to create a calm, cohesive backdrop that allows the architecture, natural light, and materials to take center stage,' says Leigha.
'Perhaps the greatest testament to the color's longevity came from the homeowners themselves. After living in the home for more than ten years while raising four children, they recently repainted the entire interior and chose Gray Owl again. To me, that's the definition of a timeless color. It wasn't selected because it was fashionable; it was selected again because they genuinely loved living with it.'
'What I appreciate most about Gray Owl is the way it evolves throughout the day,' she explains. 'Depending on the quality and direction of the light, it may read softly green in one room, warmer and almost taupe in another, and additionally reveals a subtle blue undertone. Rather than becoming predictable, it continues to feel fresh and calming as the light changes throughout the day and across the seasons.'
