As the proud steward of a patio garden, I've learnt that even the smallest spaces can work hard. The secret? Compact, multifunctional pieces – and I'm always on the lookout for options that are both chic and affordable.

Enter IKEA's Stjaernanis flower boxes. Aside from their rather memorable Swedish name, these nifty planters are sure to leave an impression thanks to their sleek, stackable design.

Measuring 17 by 6 inches, these chic outdoor planters will help you add to your garden without claiming too much valuable real estate.

They are narrow enough to be used as window boxes or balcony planters, but stack them up and they are perfect for vertical gardening – which will also help you save space, of course.

It's worth noting that, due to the slatted design, these planters are best suited for displaying potted plants (rather than planting directly into each box).

This does, however, make them a reliable addition to any container garden; plus, they are compact enough to be used indoors if you want to show off your houseplant collection.

Although I've been experimenting with planting herbs in my window boxes this spring, I'm also keen to revamp my patio ideas – especially since alfresco hosting season is just around the corner – and I love that these planters are so versatile.

No matter how much square footage you have to work with, an option like this will help you experiment with planting – while making your yard feel styled and intentional.

Add a few hanging baskets (like Terrain's rattan hanging stripe planter) and a chic plant stand (like IKEA's Askholmen plant stand) and you'll have a spectacular vertical garden in no time.

Personally, my dream cottage garden is filled with plenty of rustic touches and trailing plants, and although I might be lacking in space, these IKEA planters feel like an easy and affordable way to bring my vision to life.

Plus, the warm wood and simple silhouette will complement a huge range of design styles, whether you lean toward rustic touches or contemporary minimalism.

What Shoppers Say

Online, the Stjarnanis flower boxes have been praised both for their stylish design and simple setup.

'Easy to assemble and install,' writes one shopper. 'Perfect for small 4” flower pots.'

It's worth noting that the flower boxes are color co-ordinated with plenty of other garden pieces, too – including IKEA's Nanmaro open kitchen unit (which doubles as a potting bench) alongside an array of outdoor furniture.
