The idea of pairing yellow with blue can seem like a bold move, but when carried out with a considered approach, there are few color pairings as fitting for the spring months.
Designers are turning toward soft shades of yellow (think buttery shades that feel sophisticated rather than vibrant) and rich ochre tones, and pairing them with cool, muted, and crisp blues that provide balance. Together, they feel slightly unexpected but full of charm.
If, like me, you're feeling inspired to give this color trend a go this spring, read on to get designers' takes, from the best paint shades to decorating tips. While this color pairing looks endlessly stylish as a whole-room color scheme, you can also add it to existing palettes for a more subtle and seasonal approach.

In this powder room, soft blue wall paneling is warmed up with the butter yellow wallpaper, creating a cozy and calming space.
Yellow has been a hugely popular color in interiors lately, adding warmth and a touch of nostalgic charm to many a space. In some cases, it works in place of neutrals – think creamy butter yellows that aren't too saturated – while in others, it brings vibrancy and sunshine-inspired happiness to rooms. With any variation of this joyful color, choosing the right color pairing is key, and blue seems to be the leading choice among designers right now.
Since yellow is a warm color, pairing it with cool-toned blue can cut through the warmth and create a much more modern feel. It's a color pairing that brings balance and a slightly playful feel, while color psychology tells us that yellow brings optimism and energy, while blue brings calmness.
While the combination of yellow and blue would make for a stylish color scheme year-round, it feels especially fitting for this time of year as a spring color idea, with its association with coastal settings and sunny days.
How to Use Yellow and Blue in Your Home
The key to pulling off this colorful pairing is to choose variations of yellow and blue that feel balanced and easy to live with, avoiding anything too saturated or jarring – as shown in these swoon-worthy projects.

1. Pair Powder Blue Walls With Butter Yellow Kitchen Cabinets
In this kitchen, Mylands' Lambeth Walk (a similar shade to Farrow & Ball's Lulworth Blue) was used to color-drench the room, while the cabinets were painted with Pollen by Atelier Ellis (similar to Little Greene's Madeleine).
In the heart of the home, soft shades of blue and yellow add warmth, personality, and make a welcome change from predictable neutrals. Here, a light blue paint was used on the panelled walls, while the kitchen cabinets were painted a butter yellow.
'The idea to color drench in blue was born out of my love for green and blue together,' explains the interior designer Holly Vaughan of Vaughan Design & Development, since the kitchen looks out onto lots of greenery. 'I love to pair yellow with blue as this adds the warmth, and brings a bit of sunshine to the space,' she says.
'These colors replicate the colors we find in nature, which is why they work so well together,' she adds.
2. Add Warmth to Small Rooms With a Rich Ochre
In smaller rooms, a richer shade of yellow, such as Farrow & Ball's India Yellow, can help create a cozy and cocooning atmosphere.
This bathroom uses yellow as the deeper shade, teamed with a light, fresh shade of blue that adds contrast and balance. While pale butter yellow paints work well in well-lit spaces, you may find that going for a richer ochre is more effective in small rooms, adding plenty of warmth and depth.
'The paint is Farrow & Ball's India Yellow, which contrasts beautifully against the pale watery blue-green of the tile wainscot,' explains the interior designer Jessica Helgerson, based between Portland and Paris. 'The warm yellow comes back again on the floor, as it does throughout the house,' she adds. 'It brightens each space without feeling overwhelming to the house as a whole.'
3. Introduce Red as an Accent Color
Even though red, yellow, and blue are all prominent colors in this kitchen, the space maintains a calming feel thanks to the soft, grounding nature of each color.
This cozy kitchen proves that sometimes more is more when it comes to color, teaming the soft yellow and blue color palette with a pop of red on the kitchen tiles.
'We chose a buttery yellow because the clients wanted the space to feel warm, uplifting, and full of joy the moment you walked in,' explains the designer and founder of Studio Mac, Ailsa MacConnell. 'For me, yellow does exactly that. We used Hay by Farrow & Ball, which is the perfect soft, buttery shade – subtle enough to feel timeless, but with enough depth to make a statement.'
'Blue and yellow work so beautifully together, so choosing Jane Churchill’s Firle Stripe for the seat upholstery felt like an easy decision,' she adds. 'The checkerboard tile backsplash added that extra sense of fun and personality to the kitchen, tying everything together beautifully. I always love incorporating small pops of red into my schemes. For some reason, they always seem to finish a room off perfectly.'
4. Add Soft Yellow and Blue Decor to Neutral Rooms
Alongside the Farrow & Ball Wimborne White walls, the soft blue and yellow furnishings bring warmth, while the overall look is timeless.
If you're looking for a way to add the stylish color combination of yellow and blue to your home without painting the walls, choose soft furnishings to elevate your existing scheme. In this transitional living room, the muted yellow sofa with light blue pillows adds warmth and interest to the space, while the clean white walls keep things crisp and timeless.
'I love the combination of muted blue and yellow together,' says the NYC designer Jennifer Hunter. 'When softened, blue becomes grounding rather than cold, and yellow reads as warm and inviting instead of overly bright. Together, they strike this really beautiful balance that feels both cheerful and composed.'
5. Decorate With Wallpaper for a Classic Look
This breakfast nook feels refined and timeless, using a delicate shade of yellow on the walls with a muted blue window treatment.
For a more decorative, traditional take on this color combination, consider adding a patterned wallpaper to your scheme.
At this breakfast nook, a soft yellow and blue wallpaper was chosen to lighten the space, explain the founders of Illinois-based design studio Park & Oak, Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto: 'The house initially felt dark and masculine, so our goal was to introduce a softer, more feminine touch while making the space feel light and cheerful. We were drawn to the Rose Tarlow wallpaper to help brighten the room, which beautifully blends the muted slate blue with the warm, creamy meringue yellow, giving the space a bright and happy atmosphere.'
6. Create a Coastal-Inspired Bedroom
Blue and yellow don't have to be bold; this bedroom nods to these two colors through smaller decor accents.
This bedroom showcases the blue and yellow color pairing in a much more subtle way. With creamy pale yellow bedding and a pop of blue from the artwork and throw pillow, this room is one to take inspiration from if you want to add these colors to a neutral bedroom.
The interior designer behind COAL Architecture & Interior Design, Emily Reilly, says that the color palette took inspiration from coastal settings. 'The color scheme of blue and yellow for the bedroom and adjoining bathroom was inspired by a sunny day at the beach,' she says. 'Photographic prints on the walls show scenes of a golden Cornish summer's beach day where the sea sparkles in many shades of teal, turquoise, and deep blue, and the yellow gorse on the coast path makes the air smell of coconut. These two colors together never fail to feel happy.'
