The Opening Note

If you’ve been following my content for a while, you’ll probably know how much I love decorating small rooms. To me, they’re some of the most rewarding spaces to design. They encourage you to be more creative, more intentional, and a little smarter with every decision you make.

While compact spaces certainly come with their challenges, I genuinely believe they offer advantages that larger rooms often lack. There’s something inherently inviting about a small room when it’s designed well – it feels warm, personal, and lived-in in a way oversized spaces can sometimes struggle to achieve.

I’ve always believed a small room isn’t something you need to 'work around' – it’s something you can fully embrace. With the right layout, layered textures, and thoughtful details, a compact space can feel every bit as functional and beautiful as a larger one, while still holding onto that sense of coziness and connection that makes a home feel truly personal.

When it comes to choosing pieces for a small space, don’t fall into the trap of thinking everything needs to be small. I often find that compact rooms benefit most from oversized furniture, bold color palettes, and eye-catching decor that draws the eye around the room – and upward, where possible. Lighting also plays a huge role in how a space feels. A mix of wall lights, table lamps, and soft ambient lighting can instantly make a compact room feel layered, inviting, and far more expansive.

Decorating with mirrors and metallic objects is a timeless way to make a room feel larger, but texture, layered finishes, and thoughtful color combinations can create just as much impact. My favorite small-room palettes usually begin with a neutral foundation – think beige, taupe, greige, soft greens, or terracotta – before introducing vibrant primary colors like red, blue, and yellow to bring the space to life.

Storage is another key element in making a small space work beautifully. I always look for clever, multifunctional pieces that combine practicality with style – whether that’s an ottoman with hidden storage, a side table that doubles as a desk, or shelving that adds both display space and personality. In smaller rooms, every piece has the opportunity to work a little harder without sacrificing character.

One of the greatest advantages of a compact home is how effortlessly functional it can feel. Everything is within easy reach, and maintenance becomes far more manageable. In this edit, I’ve selected the furniture, accessories, and decor pieces I personally love –and in many cases, already own – to elevate a bijou space.

Above all, remember that decorating a small room should be fun. These spaces are the perfect opportunity to experiment, take creative risks, and let your personality shine.

Next week on The Very British Edit, I’ll be focusing on something that feels especially relevant right now: end-of-spring into summer decor, and how to redo your home as the seasons change. I don't know about you, but I am ready to welcome in the warmer weather.

Summer is honestly my favorite season. I love the longer days, lighter evenings, and that feeling of everything opening up a bit. That said, it doesn’t exactly love me back – I deal with pretty rough seasonal allergies, so it’s a mix of enjoying the sunshine while also keeping tissues close by.

This time of year always feels like a reset at home. Heavier layers start to feel out of place, and there’s a natural pull toward lighter fabrics, softer colors, and small updates that make everything feel fresher without overhauling your space.

Lately, I’ve been drawn to how much impact you can get from simple seasonal swaps. Swapping heavier textiles, leaning into natural materials, softening the color palette, and bringing in pieces that feel airy and unfussy can completely shift the mood. It’s less about redecorating and more about editing – letting the space breathe and feel in step with the season.

I’ll also be sharing a few pieces I’ve been looking at lately that work especially well right now – lightweight throws, understated accents, softer lighting, and natural materials that instantly make a space feel calmer and more open.

Over time, I’ve found the best seasonal updates are always the subtle ones. The kind that don’t scream ‘new decor,’ but instead make a room feel like it’s naturally evolved with the weather and light.
