My obsession with home diffusers started in my student days, and I used mine regularly to keep my dorm room smelling fresh and to give off a calming scent when I was stressed out with my studies. But it was a basic model, without the bells and whistles.

If I'd seen this ASAKUKI oil diffuser from Amazon back then, it would definitely have piqued my interest. With 64,000 reviews and a long list of 5-star ratings, it's hard to believe it's just $21. It's no surprise then that a portable version of it (great if you want to move it around different rooms in a house, but not so important for a dorm room) features in our best essential oil diffusers guide.

Our tester said that unlike most water-based diffusers, which make a little noise, this one was 'completely silent', and was impressed with the fact that it 'was easy to adjust the strength setting and the run-time'. They also mentioned that water-based diffusers like this one are 'great for humidifying rooms that would otherwise feels cold and dry', while you may be tempted by a waterless option if there's no sink in the dorm room.

While the best candles and luxurious reed diffusers can be a splurge, I'm a firm believer that simple diffusers like this, is one of the best home fragrance options out there, and you can ring the changes with different oils to suit your preferences, too.

The ASAKUKI diffuser has a 500ml capacity, and it's quick to start dispensing fragrance (I'm partial to eucalyptus oil or patchouli). I love how it looks on a desk or shelf too, thanks to its minimal design. It's both a statement and something that blends in beautifully without taking up much space – especially as it doubles up as a stylish mood lamp thanks to 7 color-changing LED modes. The light can be controlled independently from the mist function, too – so even if you run out of essential oils, you've still got a chic and functional decor piece for a dorm room.

It also has an adjustable timer, which is great for when you're winding down before bed without having to worrying about getting up to switch it off. It will automatically shut off when the water is low, too, which brings peace of mind, particularly if you forgot to switch it off before running out to a lecture. Plus, it's BPA-free, meaning it's low-toxin – another tick from me.

While some reviewers had issues with the diffuser, warning that it stopped working properly after a few months, the majority of comments were positive, many describing it as a durable option that's lasted them for years.

'I'm absolutely thrilled with this,' reads one review. 'From the moment I unboxed it, I could tell it was a quality product. It works great – it quickly and effectively disperses essential oils, filling my living room with a lovely aroma. I've used several diffusers in the past, and this one truly stands out for its performance.'

Buyers were also impressed with the multiple setting options. 'I absolutely love these diffusers,' adds another customer. 'They’re well-made and super versatile, with multiple mist and light settings that let you adjust for whatever mood or situation you’re in.'

While starting or going back to school can take some getting used to, especially if you're sharing a dorm room. A few home comforts like a diffuser can make all the difference, and make the transition as stress-free as possible. Just be sure to check with any room mates about allergies or fragrance sensitivities before using as you don't want to get off on the wrong foot at the start.

Decorating a dorm room can be a really fun experience, too, and I'd say this Amazon diffuser is definitely worth a spot on your college dorm room checklist.
