In 2026, design is about harnessing unused spaces and turning surprising corners into design-led experiences. The patio is the newest frontier for this philosophy, moving away from the idea of a few chairs on a platform into full designs that feel like an extension of the home. For evidence, look no further than David Henrie's pergola transformation.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star, his wife Maria Henrie, and his mother Linda Henrie collaborated with Azenco Outdoor and the team at Innov8 Outdoor to create the outdoor living room of their dreams at the Henrie family home in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Leslie Chapus, VP & Co-Founder at Azenco Outdoor tells Homes & Gardens of the pergola design: 'For the Henrie family, the project was about creating a place where they can truly enjoy time together outdoors. The final result reflects their lifestyle and gives them a space that feels comfortable, welcoming, and beautifully built.'

Recreate David's Look at Home

Though the finished product appears simple, complex home technology and careful design make it flow all together. The Henries' pergola roof includes two motorized louvered pergolas attached to the home, integrated LED strip, and recessed lighting for ambiance, three motorized screens (Black 90-textile) for privacy, and Arielle-lk ceiling fans in black for added comfort.

These details come together to create the perfect retreat. On Instagram, David shares: 'It’s quickly become our family’s favorite spot to unwind, eat, and enjoy the view.'

So, why does everything about this outdoor living room fit together so perfectly?

Will DeWitt, CEO of Innov8 Outdoors, explains: 'The layout and design of the pergolas and screens, along with the colors and architectural elements, match what you see and feel of the home. Instead of looking like an afterthought, the patio now fits right in, like it was part of the plans from the start.'

'The pergolas and screens really enhance their outdoor living space, which they didn’t have much of before,' he continues. 'Essentially, we created another room for them to enjoy. It flows easily from the indoors out, as the doors from the home lead right into the pergola space.'

Though Henrie's design appears complicated, replicating the style comes down to prioritizing function and alignment.

The Azenco team advises: 'To recreate this look, focus on a clean, modern design that complements your home. Choose a neutral color palette, integrate lighting and fans for comfort, and add screens for privacy.'

Good design can turn any space into part of the home, and outdoor areas are the perfect place to start. As the story of David Henrie's patio demonstrates, the effects go far beyond design.
