Decorating with yellow is a polarizing choice. When used in large swaths, it can look garish or overwhelming, but when used as a subtle accent, it conveys just the right amount of joy and whimsy. Jane Fonda's living room is a masterclass in the latter.

We spotted the actress's method for decorating with yellow in the background of her appearance on Live with Andy Cohen, broadcast from her home. The space has gray walls hung with gold and wooden frames. She has a blue velvet sofa, expertly accented with bright yellow throw pillows. A small round coffee table and vase of orchids ground the look.

Jane's living room color is deeply emblematic of the '70s, resembling the trends and styles of this time. Over 50 years later, the looks from these years are back in vogue. According to Google data, searches for ‘lemon yellow decor’ increased 100% and searches for ‘70s home decor’ soared by 277% over the past month.

Bright yellow accents, like Jane Fonda's lemon-colored cushions are emerging as one of the biggest interior design trends of the coming year.

Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, interior design expert and co-founder at furniture retailer Dowsing & Reynolds explains: 'Butter yellow has been the trend of the year, through autumn and winter, but this summer it’s all about lemon yellow. The lemontini trend is a beautiful take on bright yellow - a perfect throwback to striking shades of the 1970s.'

Decorating a yellow living room requires a delicate touch. Ally advises: 'Yellow in the home can be controversial, but when used right, the zesty shade can bring a joyful feel and brighten up a space. Use the shade sparingly, with pops of yellow through decorative accessories, wall art, and soft furnishings.'

The mix of blue and yellow is an unusual pairing, but it can be one of the most stunning mixtures possible. Take it from Jane Fonda.
