We famously spend one-third of our lives sleeping, and our investments in our bedroom should reflect this. Maria Sharapova harnesses this philosophy with a luxurious, natural mattress.

The tennis player sleeps on a bed from one of the best luxury mattress brands. Maria explains: 'Sleep is essential to performance regardless of industry or where people may be in their careers. My first big purchase after a tournament win was a Hästens mattress and even though it was an investment, it was one of the most important purchases of my career.'

She has loved her investment so much that in this new chapter of her career, the athlete has chosen to partner with the brand, known as one of the best places to buy a mattress. 'As I focus my post-playing career on helping others achieve elite performance in their lives, I wanted to partner with Hästens to help broaden the way we think about performance with the understanding of how vital sleep is to everyone in every industry,' she states.

Futhermore, Maria's purchase is a masterclass in how to buy a mattress, as her purchase has lasted over 20 years. She explains, 'My love for Hästens goes back to 2004 when I went to the store in Los Angeles with my first big paycheck from a tournament I won. I had the most amazing experience.'

Maria gushes: 'It was quite an investment at the time for me, but nonetheless, I still sleep on that bed to this day, so it shows how much love I have for Hästens beds and passion and history. I am fascinated by the process of how beds are made because of the exceptional quality that it represents.”

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to the question 'how much should I spend on a mattress.' However, experts agree it's an area worth investing in. It's the perfect way to tap into the current move towards quiet luxury over fast purchases.

Adam Black, mattress expert and co-founder of Button & Sprung, recommends: 'Your bedroom is the ideal room to embrace quiet luxury. Quiet luxury conjures a calming environment; a minimalist and responsible space which is restful, sustainable, and beneficial to our wellbeing. You can embrace the minimalist side of the trend straight away with a really good tidy of clutter and only keeping what is useful and regularly used.'

He continues, 'The most appropriate way to embrace quiet luxury is to replace items as needed with investment pieces. Examples of this can be a naturally filled mattress to replace one with memory foams and other plastics (you are then on a path with mattresses which can always be recycled) and beds which are made with care from solid wood. This is a prevailing mood more than a trend and it’s OK if it takes time to achieve a full quiet luxury space.
