I asked interior designers to share the biggest outdoor furniture trends to help me create the chicest patio this summer – here’s what they said

Elevate your garden with 2025's must-know outdoor furniture trends that balance trendiness and timeless design

Outdoor furniture trends have come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days of boring, bulk standard furniture, and in 2025, we're styling our outdoor spaces with just as much care and creativity as indoors.

'Outdoor furniture is becoming almost indistinguishable from indoor furniture,' says Challie Stillman from Resource Furniture. 'The lines are softer, the materials more tactile, and the palettes more refined. Many pieces look like they could just as easily work in your living room, and that’s exactly the point. People want their patio furniture ideas to be just as stylish and comfortable as the rest of their home, and now the furniture finally supports that vision.'

Whether you have a small city balcony or a sprawling garden, this new wave of outdoor furniture trends makes spending time outside feel even more exciting. Ahead, I’ve rounded up the outdoor furniture trends that are making the biggest impact right now, with expert insights and tips on how to bring them into your own backyard.

After refreshing my own space with some of these outdoor furniture trends, I can genuinely say my garden has never felt more inviting, or more me. And the best part? You don’t need a full overhaul – just one or two well-chosen pieces to shift the mood. And these trends offer the perfect jumping-off point to create an outdoor space that truly reflects your style.

1. Stripes

We all love to decorate with stripes indoors, but have you taken them outside yet? This season, stripes are showing up everywhere – and I’m not just talking about the classic navy-and-white deckchair combo.

'Stripes outdoors aren’t just a trend – they’re a visual through-line that’s spanned everything from Victorian deckchairs to Slim Aarons-style pool scenes and that effortless Hamptons charm,' explains Louisa Tratalos, founder of Colours of Arley. 'What feels new right now is how bold people are getting with their color choices. I’m a particular fan of when wide stripes are used as a base and layered with cushions in mixed stripe widths or checks in the same palette. It adds a hit of fun and personality, while still feeling thoughtful and beautifully pulled together.'

This season, stripes are showing up outdoors in bolder, more unexpected ways: think chunky cabana stripes on oversized cushions, tonal ticking on upholstery, and even playful trims that add a fun feel to a garden setup.

'We’re seeing a growing number of fabric houses offering signature prints in outdoor-ready finishes,' adds designer Lauren Gilberthorpe. 'A particular favourite is Balcony Stripe by Nicky Haslam for Jean Monro, which launched earlier this year – a playful yet timeless stripe pattern that feels entirely at home in an outdoor setting.'

2. Vintage-style wrought iron

The wrought iron outdoor furniture trend is a personal favorite of mine. There’s something about its sculptural curves, intricate detailing, and undeniable European flair that makes it feel romantic and achingly chic.

'There’s something quietly romantic about vintage-style garden furniture, especially wrought iron,' agrees co-founder of Olive Ateliers, Laura Sotelo. 'It evokes memories of European courtyards and sun-dappled afternoons. You can feel why people are drawn to it, not just for the look but for the feeling it creates, a sense of permanence, patina, and presence. Wrought iron has roots in centuries-old craftsmanship, and in today’s world of the disposable and mass-produced, that kind of weight and soul resonates.'

Whether it’s a dainty bistro set or an ornate garden bench, wrought iron brings an old-world elegance to outdoor spaces that modern materials just can’t replicate. 'Mediterranean inspiration is big, add terracotta pots, olive trees, linen tablecloths, and handmade ceramics,' suggests Leigh Lincoln, co-founder & principal designer at Pure Salt Interiors.

3. Classic teak

If there’s one outdoor furniture material that never lets me down, it’s teak. This rich, honey-toned wood has a warmth and timelessness that works with practically any style: from coastal gardens to a traditional cottage garden.

But the reason for its trending renaissance? None other than Nancy Meyers herself, and if you're looking to create some Hamptons-style outdoor movie magic with your patio furniture choices this summer, teak is it.

What makes teak feel fresh now is scale – we’re seeing chunkier profiles, wide arms, and low, lounge-y silhouettes that blur the line between indoor and outdoor.

'Go all natural with teak. For coastal accents, classic striped pillows and solids with nice trim details, and add one of our lobster or crab motif pillows to bring that bit of nostalgia that makes everyone smile,' suggests Kirsty Williams, Serena & Lily's chief design officer.

4. Rattan

Rattan has always had a place in my heart because it adds a vintage, organic feel to a space. But this season, rattan is getting a modern update.

'Open concept furniture like rattan has been growing in popularity; however, natural rattan does not lend itself to withstanding harsher weather conditions,' says designer Birdie Fortescue. 'Consider an outdoor furniture set that has the look of rattan but is fully weatherproof. Made from lightweight aluminium, these designs combine durability and comfort, and can easily be moved to create a relaxed outdoor area that encourages conversation and adds character and texture to your garden.'

Designers are reimagining the natural woven material with pretty new color palettes, experimental weaves and patterns, and mixed finishes that make it feel current and versatile. Whether you’re going full boho or aiming for something a little more elevated, rattan is one of the easiest ways to bring warmth and texture to an outdoor setup.

5. Statement patio umbrellas

I never used to think of the patio umbrella as more than just a practical necessity, but that’s completely changed. This summer, parasols have gone from background players to standout style moments, and I’m fully on board.

From bold stripes and scalloped and fringed edges in vintage-inspired prints, today’s outdoor umbrellas will instantly elevate your space.

'A well-chosen patio umbrella is becoming a statement piece in its own right, bringing scale, personality, and playfulness to a garden scheme,' agrees Chloe Wills of Interiors by Chloe. 'There’s a growing appetite for patterned fabrics, bold stripes and decorative details such as fringing or embroidered trims. These pieces provide both shade and a visual focal point, adding charm to a more understated backdrop. Just make sure to store them during wet weather to preserve their color and shape,' she advises.

'Pop up a parasol for an instant summer refresh, not only does this summer staple provide the practicality of shade, whether enjoying lunch with friends al fresco or relaxing with a book in a favourite chair, it also adds instant color, pattern, and personality to the garden,' adds Tasha Green, founder of Weaver Green.

So whether you’re setting up for a summer garden party, lazy weekend lounging, or a peaceful morning coffee on the balcony, there’s never been a better and more stylish time to experiment with your outdoor style.
