Gone are the days when outdoor furniture was limited to a pair of basic plastic chairs and a matching table. The trend for liveable comfort has moved beyond our interiors, making its way into backyards everywhere.
From rounder shapes to softer surfaces, this year's outdoor furniture trends embrace qualities once reserved for interior design. From plush sofas to cozy armchairs, upholstered styles are transforming gardens into comfortable havens designed to be enjoyed all season long.
'It feels like a natural evolution. We’ve spent so long softening our interiors that it makes sense our patios are following suit', explains interior designer Pandora Taylor. 'There’s something wonderfully inviting about those deep, generous silhouettes outdoors; they encourage you to properly settle in rather than just perch. The key is that the materials live up to the look – if technical fabrics can genuinely deliver both comfort and resilience, then it’s a trend with real staying power.'

Jess Alavi-Ellis used Northern Quarter & Peat by Colours of Arley to cover her custom banquette seating in her garden.
Outdoor furniture is becoming almost identical to indoor styles in 2026. While outdoor sofas have long been popular, plusher shapes are becoming a familiar sight in today's gardens.
Despite typically being found in a kitchen, interior designer Jess Alavi-Ellis created a bespoke banquette seat in her garden. 'I designed the bench to be ultra comfy and look like a banquette you’d usually see indoors with a big bolster cushion and a deep foam (I used yacht foam, which is much more suited to outdoor use).'
'I can’t get enough of comfy outdoor spaces, who wants to lounge in the sunshine on plastic or metal?', says Jess, 'I’m all for usable spaces that draw you in or let’s face it, we won’t use them at all.'
'Style your outside space as you would your inside one, rugs, side tables, deep cushions, lamps,' adds Jess, 'You can get outdoor versions of all of these things, but I’m not averse to just dragging indoor versions of everything outside and sitting myself down with a magazine and a glass of wine.'

A plush sofa and wrought iron loveseat provide ample seating opportunity in this outdoor paradise designed by Pandora Taylor.
From outdoor rugs to comfy armchairs, patios are becoming more than places to soak up some sun; they're outdoor living spaces designed to aid everyday life.
Pandora designed this enviable outdoor living room in a recent project, anchored by a plush sofa and a striking gingham rug. When designing liveable outdoor spaces, she says, 'I'd avoid making it feel too ‘decorated’ and instead let the garden lead. Upholstered pieces work well when they’re balanced with more natural, textural elements like timber, stone, or slightly weathered finishes, so they don’t feel out of place.'
'Keep the palette soft and a little faded, and think carefully about positioning: somewhere sheltered or gently enclosed always helps create that sense of an outdoor room.'
Wicker furniture and a jute rug make this New England porch (designed by Atelier Roan) feel just like a living room.
'I think it’s a wonderful evolution and a beautiful way to truly live outdoors. We’re seeing outdoor spaces become just as considered and comfortable as interiors, which I love', says Grace Rosenstein of Atelier Roan. 'When furniture has the depth, softness, and silhouette of an indoor piece, it invites you to stay longer, to entertain more naturally, and to use the space in a meaningful way.'
'For me, that’s exactly how we live. Whether it’s gathered around a fire pit, dining in the garden, or relaxing on our back deck, a comfortable outdoor setup has become invaluable. My kids will sit and color at the coffee table while my husband grills, we’ll have music playing softly in the background, and I’ll pour a glass of wine. It feels effortless. I’ve hosted countless evenings out there with friends, with cheese boards, candles, and great music, and there’s nothing better than hearing the crickets on a perfect summer night while everyone is laughing. It’s those moments that make the design worthwhile.'
When it comes to designing an outdoor living room, Grace says, 'I always approach outdoor spaces the same way I would an interior, through the lens of how people will actually gather and connect. Layout is everything. Seating should feel conversational, with pieces facing one another so it encourages interaction rather than feeling scattered or decorative.'

The upholstered garden trend is, of course, about aesthetics, but more importantly, it draws on our growing desire for spaces that comfort, inspire, and aid everyday living. 'Ultimately, the goal is to create a space that feels like a true extension of your home,' says Grace, 'comfortable, practical, and just a little bit magical.'
