I'm H&G's style editor – these are the easy fall updates I am buying for my home this weekend
I am more than ready for cozy season, so these are the pieces I have ordered to update my home quickly and stylishly
Fall decor has a relatively short shelf life, so I am all for embracing the switch-up of my interiors as soon as September comes around. I introduce them slowly, a new throw here, a few more rich-colored pillows there, and like my closet by the end of September, I have totally transitioned from summer to fall with relatively little effort.
I also like to add to my fall decor collection each year, so this weekend I am doing a deep dive into what all my favorite stores are offering up. Anthropologie, West Elm, CB2 (and more) are always my go-to, as they are perfect for more subtle, chic fall decor ideas that suit my minimalist style. And because we don't like to gatekeep at H&G, I am sharing all my top buys, to provide you with some inspiration too.
Stylish fall decor that will instantly cozy up your home
When shopping for fall decor I like to ensure anything new I buy can carry me through past Thanksgiving and into the holidays. So while I do like to add the odd pumpkin here and there, I'm more about the soft furnishings – new cozier bedding, throw, pillows, rugs, and layering up textures. I have included some very 'fall' pieces here, but most of these buys can stay out right until spring comes around again.
For me, the fall decor starts with the best candles. That kicks off the season for me, getting my home smelling like fall bringing in all the cozy vibes before I have made any switches with my decor. That being said, I like my candles to double as decor, hence why I am choosing this chic but also very seasonal pumpkin candle from Anthropologie.
Next, I look at new pillows. This is when I really start to notice a difference in how my home feels. Creating a cozy living room is a must as the weather starts to change, and pillows are the easiest way to do that. It's not just about those fall-appropriate colors either, I look for textures, anything with a deep pile, a boucle effect, or even faux fur is going to create those lovely layers that are so important with fall decor.
I know this throw doesn't feature the typical fall color scheme, but I was drawn to the cute folksy print. This is how I like to bring in those more obvious fall motifs – leaves, deer, and an even entire woodland scene, yet it somehow doesn't feel too obviously fall. Plus, I do like to bring in some blues to contrast the browns, burnt oranges, and neutrals to help lift those warmer tones.
I always switch my curtains with each new season. Currently, I have white linen, which is typically summery, but as the night starts to draw in, I am going to be switching to this beautiful option. Again, I love that they are very fall-appropriate but in a chic and subtle way. Plus, these smaller, vintage-inspired prints are a huge fall trend right now – ditch the plaid, and go for something softer instead.
'Tis the season for hosting. So I am focusing a lot of my fall decor buys on fall table decor. These fabulous amber glasses would work at any time of year, but I love how they look in this setup amongst all the pale fall tones – a cool, modern twist to a Thanksgiving table.
Another one for the table. But until I get into the full swing of holiday hosting, these will be the start of my fall mantle decor. With beige and orange taper candles, they are a lovely way to start decorating for fall and I can add to the display throughout the month.
In my house, the bedroom tends to get a bit ignored when it comes to fall decor. Only that it's not as seen by guests as my other rooms, so I like to focus my efforts there instead. But I do like to switch up my bedding to create a cozier bedroom, and if the name is anything to go by, this crushed velvet duvet will do just that.
I always find I need more soft lighting in the fall. So I am adding this one to my collection. I simply adore the mushroom lamp design trend, and this delightful option will be a chic nod to the subtle woodland theme I have curated in my home. The soft warm light it casts will be perfect on my kitchen side to make it feel more inviting when the days start to get shorter.
A stand mixer is not exactly decor, it is still going into my weekend wishlist. A KitchenAid has been on my wish list for years, and it's currently in the KitchenAid sale at CB2. I am justifying it with the fact that I do a lot of baking in the fall, and would be nice to have some help with that task. Also, this is going to look gorgeous on my kitchen side, so I am counting it as decor too.
If you are unsure of when to start decorating for fall, let me be the one to tell you – now. Now is the time. And as I mentioned, you don't need to overhaul your decor all at once, switch things up over the coming weeks. Hopefully this has inspired you to do some fall shopping this weekend and all these pieces will help your home feel cozier for the change in weather.
