Fruit and vegetables that don’t need to take up space in your fridge inevitably end up on your counter, and I’m betting you have an eyesore of a plastic tiered tower for ease and convenience.
However, it’s time to switch to a non-toxic storage solution, such as IKEA’s $39.99 KANELMOTT, a rattan and bamboo tower, which also doubles as decor.
It’s nod to Scandinavian minimalism, coupled with its sturdy bamboo and rattan construction, makes it a quiet luxury that will serve as a necessity in your kitchen storage essentials, without compromising your style.

Made from two levels of bamboo, a fast-growing resource that is kinder to the planet, this chic swap will sit pretty on your counter or in your pantry. It’s perfect for storing potatoes in the bottom layer, which has a bamboo lid to keep the root vegetables in the dark to prolong their shelf life, and citrus fruits on top.
Its compact footprint of 13 ½ inches wide, and 9 ½ inches high, means it’s suitable for small kitchens and pantries, while the double-layer and closing lid function on the lower make it a versatile use storage space that doesn’t sprawl out on your countertop.
In spring, and as we head into summer, storing fruits and vegetables out of the fridge may save space, but it does mean you run the risk of this produce going off faster as the heat and humidity impact longevity.
The IKEA dual-layer tower design, coupled with the breathable natural materials (which are a great option for being more sustainable at home), means air will circulate and reduce the risk of mold or accelerated degradation of your fresh produce, performing better than any original plastic packaging that might come with the fruit and vegetables from the store.
Uses for Your Non-Toxic Tiered Organizer
Whether you use IKEA's KANELMOTT in your kitchen, pantry or elsewhere in the home, the chic design will help it fit in anywhere without the need to be hidden.
Just because it’s marketed for fruit, doesn’t mean that’s its only useful function. This could easily sit on a bathroom vanity or a guest room, and hold items you wish to conceal discreetly, such as sanitary products.

If your bathroom is poorly ventilated, I would not recommend keeping this item there, as bamboo is porous and can become damaged over time.
As the two sections are detachable, you can use them in separate areas of the home, or together as a smart way to maximize vertical space.
It's Easy to Clean and Maintain
Whilst bamboo has anti-bacterial properties from a natural bio-agent called bamboo kun that makes the living plant resistant to pests and bacteria, once it’s processed into a household product such as IKEA's KANELMOTT, this property is significantly diminished. It won’t kill bacteria on contact like a disinfectant would, so you do need to clean it manually.
You can clear dust daily with a microfiber cloth, and when the tower needs freshening up, add a little dish soap, such as Dawn, available in bulk from Amazon, to your clean, damp microfiber cloth to wipe down and remove any grime or sticky residue.
Allow the item to fully air dry before restocking with your items of choice. Never put it in the dishwasher or submerge it in water.
