Espresso is notoriously difficult to perfect at home. It requires the right grind size, precise pressure, and a careful technique to achieve a genuinely barista-quality shot.
Even with the best espresso machine and exceptional beans, there’s one often-overlooked tool that can make a noticeable difference – the humble WDT tool, also known as a needle tool. One of the best among them? The Normcore WDT Distribution Tool is available at Amazon.
Subtle details, such as needle gauge and count, can seriously influence how evenly the coffee is distributed before extraction and affect your drink's consistency. Here’s how it works, and why coffee experts always opt for Normcore to refine their setup.

This nine-pin professional-grade WDT is designed specifically for even ground distribution, with ultra-fine 0.3mm gauge stainless steel needles. The ergonomic walnut wood handle looks great on your counter, too, and the included stand protects against damage while providing somewhere to easily store it.
There is a lot that goes into making espresso at home, and while the smallest details might not seem all that important in the larger routine, incorrect distribution of grinds can result in a sour, bitter brew.
As former barista and co-founder of Home Coffee Expert, Matt Woodburn-Simmonds, explains, 'WDT tools break up clumps of grounds that form while finely grinding coffee beans. This is especially common when you use grinders with burrs smaller than 60mm, which comprises most coffee grinders for at-home use.
'These clumps create uneven grounds distribution in your coffee puck and can result in channelling, water going straight through a narrow gap in your grounds rather than filtering through the coffee bed, or just uneven extraction. Both of which can ruin the flavor of your espresso.'
A high-quality WDT (Weiss Distribution Tool), with the correct balance of gauge, configuration, and depth, can distribute ultra-fine grinds more evenly. Using a WDT tool can break up clumps and create a nice and even distribution of grounds before tamping and using with your best coffee maker.

'This more uniform coffee puck forces the water to travel through all your coffee grounds in a nice and even manner, meaning more consistent and better balanced flavor extraction,' Matt explains.
Two things make for a good needle tool:
- Needle gauge: 0.25–0.3 mm needles slip between particles without creating their own micro-channels; thicker needles, 0.4 mm and above, are more durable but push grounds around. Thin needles stirred through the full depth of the grounds break the clumps, collapse the voids, and redistribute particles evenly.
- Needle count: Five to seven needles is ideal for most users, offering great distribution, but you can upgrade to eight or nine needles for higher coverage on larger brews, or for a more professional tool.

Matt declares this WDT the go-to if you want an aesthetically pleasing and effective needle tool for your espresso. It melds the best of both worlds, creating a design-forward coffee station that doesn't compromise flavor for style.
With six 0.3mm needles and a screw cap cover, this smaller needle tool is ideal for on-the-move use, or for convenient storage without the risk of damaging the needles. Matt also loves this tool as a more affordable alternative for beginners.
The Airscape containers have been designed specifically to force out air and preserve the contents for longer, keeping coffee beans fresh.
This ultra-sensitive scale allows for readings as low as 0.1g for the perfect bean measurement for home espresso.
