My laundry room is one of the most practical and useful spaces in my home, but the open shelves have become a bit of a mess.
As is often the case with a household corner that does a lot of heavy lifting during chores, leaving detergents and laundry tools on display for easy access has led to some chaos in this busy space in my home.
That’s why I’m picking up a stylish IKEA OMMJÄNGE basket to keep my laundry room organised without compromising on style or functionality.
Available in one large size, this beautiful rattan basket measures 15 ¾ x 15 ¾ x 10 ¼ inches, and is reinforced with a steel frame for durability. Rattan ages naturally over time, making it more rustic and charming as time passes.
Interior styling expert and Editor of Homes & Gardens, Jennifer Ebert, adds, ‘What I love about this scallop basket is how it manages to be both practical and stylish. The shape and soft colors instantly lift a corner of a room, making storage feel like a considered part of the design rather than an afterthought.
‘It’s proof that even everyday items – like a basket – can add texture, personality, and a touch of sophistication to your home.’
And when that chic item also serves a functional purpose, such as keeping your laundry room decluttered, it makes it mentally easier to go in and do the chores on your list. This is one way to reduce the stress and nervous system impact of clutter.
What Shoppers Say
Shoppers all over the world use it for many busy corners of their home. It's pictured here holding kindling.
Highly rated by shoppers, with an average of five out of five stars, this newer design has fans worldwide, including Canada and Germany.
They rate the aesthetically pleasing design and solid construction, with one shopper who gave it full marks noting that it’s ‘beautiful, sturdy and spacious’. They were inspired to hold their kindling in it, and the basket was ‘bought on a whim and no regrets’.
Another calls it ‘big and beautiful’, making it perfect for laundry essentials, including pegs, dryer balls for better efficiency and less static, detergent measuring cups to avoid 'overdosing' your laundry, and scented beads or dryer sheets.
What to Shop
Keeping your laundry space tidy and the task running smoothly day in and day out calls for a mix of useful tools. I have curated my top six picks to make doing laundry easy, fast and convenient, without the associated mess.

This features a handy section for dryer sheets with a detachable lid, and a hinged door for quick access and hidden storage. Keeping your utility space organized will make it easier to complete tasks.
If you prefer to hang your laundry outside to air dry in the warmer months and save on your dryer running costs, this lightweight basket with comfortable carry handles is made of flexible plastic and comes in four colors.
I have this in my home, and it was a game-changer as the compartments, which pull out easily, mean that your dirty laundry is sorted into lights/darks and/or colors as you go, negating the need for time spent bending down.
This foldaway and discreet mini rail is perfect for the little laundry tasks that you don't want to run the dryer for. Simply pull it out from its fixed mount on your wall or cabinet, and hang your item to try. This is excellent for delicates such as silk, too.
This clever rack elegantly conceals your drying laundry. Not only does it make things look neater in small spaces when air drying is a must, but it also helps reduce the stress of clutter, which signals to your brain that there's another household job to do.
Stack and store things your way with this twin set of rattan organizers. Their tipped fronts stop items from rolling out, but maintain easy access for busy spaces such as laundry rooms.
Doing laundry like a pro involves checking care labels, planning what is washed together, and pulling out items that need handwashing, but it also means identifying any toxic items in your arsenal and making suitable swaps, including dryer sheet alternatives.
