In the height of summer, a breakfast smoothie is often the only thing that persuades me to eat before starting the day. It’s quick, cooling, and refreshing. However, my blender is easily the loudest appliance in my kitchen, making early-morning smoothies less than ideal when the rest of the house and the neighbors are still asleep.

Thankfully, my dad came up with a surprisingly simple fix. Using nothing more than a pair of scissors and a $6 sheet of rubber matting from Amazon, he found a way to significantly dampen the noise of my best blender without affecting performance.

The upgrade is virtually invisible, doesn't detract from the look of my kitchen, and makes an immediate difference to the sound level. Better still, it can be used for almost any countertop appliance. Here's how to easily recreate it at home.

Since reviewing the Ninja BlendBoss Tumblr, I have been obsessed with smoothies. The Stanley-style cup, with its impressive blending power and overall adorable design, makes it a joy to use each morning. However, it is far from the quietest blender. In fact, it is so loud it almost hurts.

As I spend so much time in there, my goal is to make my kitchen more relaxing, and this includes limiting unnecessary noise where possible. After complaining to my dad about it, he came up with a quick fix. Adapting a trick he relies on to make a laundry room quieter, he pointed me in the direction of rubber non-slip mats.

The rubber helps protect countertops from scratches and everyday wear while absorbing vibrations to make usage noticeably and instantly quieter. What I love about the Wideskall mat from Amazon is that it can be cut to size, allowing me to trim it precisely to the footprint of my appliance so it remains invisible on my countertop and doesn't disrupt the look of my kitchen.

Better still, the leftover material doesn't go to waste. It can be used to line drawers, placed beneath my best stand mixer, or cut to fit under the best espresso machines to help dampen noise throughout the kitchen.
